; THE BOARD OF TRADE REPORST ALL TRANSACTIONS OF YEAR Detailed Story of the Remarkable 8ucceas of Board'* Efiorts in Advancing Interests of Cape May as Resort. To the President and Members of the Board of Trade of Cape May City: Gentlemen : A review of the minutes discloses the , fact that the past year has been a moat busy one for our Board of Trade. While there were some "pull-backs," yet by everlastingly keeping at it, all obstacles were overcome and good work accomplished Immediately after the reorganisation of tto Board for tbe year 1910, a aubacrip ; tion dinner was tendered our two exPresidents, Mr. Luther C. Ogden and Dr. ' Samuel F. Ware. On the day of the j 1 banquet, the League of Seashore Mayors . 1 convened at The Virginia Hotel, and were invited to the banquet. The Board ( i was addressed by Hon. Franklin P. : Stoy, Mayor of Atlantic City; Hon. . '■ Harry Wheatsn, Mayor of Anglesea ; Hon. Lattimer Baker, Mayor of Wild- j . wood; Hon. Frank Smith, Mayor of Holly Beach, and Hon. Gilbert Smith, ' i Mayor of Avalon. The dinner was s j ' grest success and much enthusiasm pre- j vailed. While tbe mayors were inseasion, they passed a resolution favoring the commencing of work on the Inland Waterway at Atlantic City and discontinuing the work in Cape May County for the time being. Your secretary became aware of t hie- fact and knowing toe detriment which would accrue to Cape May City and County, if this should be carried out, immediately sent special delivery letters to all the Mayors, Trade bodies aad Councils in the County, urging them to have their citizens send letters to the Governor condemning this move and also pass resolutions to this effect. A delegation of Cape Mar County citizens, headed by Hon. Ernest W.. Lloyd, a member of -your organization, went to Trenton at their own expense and appeared before the Governor and through these methods we succeeded in • killing thia move The Board early in the year took up the matter of better lighting of the i Boardwalk by means of arches. This project was fathered by Mr. F. W. Wolff, a member of your body and also a member of City Council. Mr. Wolff with the help of the Board succeeded in ' having an appropriation of $5000 made for this purpose, and after some little delay the arches were completed for the summer season. The result speaks for itsajf, as there were none but favorable comments passed by our citizens and summer visitors. This is the first step toward better lighting of our city. Through the efforts of Mr. Johu P. | Doyle, manager of the Hotel Cape May, j a member of the Convention Committee, the following organizations held their i j conventions at Cape May City: j The Pennsylvania State Bar Aasocia- | tion. The New Jersey Pharmaceutical Society. The Homeopathic Medical So- . [ eiety of New Jersey. The Motor Ci m- . | pony Run , j The Board of Trade presented a suit- > able prize for the Motor Company's | Run, One hundred aiql sixty-five n.a- - chines were entered and one hundred and ! thirty -seven arrived at Cape May fity. ' Cape May CSty received thousands of ' i dollars worth of free advertising on ac ' | count of tbe Run and the benefit de1 rived by Oape May is inestimable. Mr. ' Doyle has also secured tbe following conventions for the year 1911: The National Association of Oar AcI counting Officers. Tbe Pennsylvania Bar Association. The following oommittee, appointed by President Haynes, was sent to Phil- ■ addphia to urge Mr. B. Hewlett to establish his flihing industry at Oapa May City, which is tto largest of iu kind: Messrs. E. W. Lioyd, A. W. Hand, Jao ' P. Doyle, M. H. Kearns, J F Jacoby, I Adam Suelke and John Maeray. Preai I dent Haynes also accompanied them. Tto committee waited on Mr. Hewlett and reported that if a suitable site i could be secured on tto harbor front, to would ooc aider tto matter favorably. This matter is still pending. In January, upon tto suggestion of Mr. E. W. Lloyd, 'the Board appointed ' toe following committee, to to known aa , tto "Mey Monument Committee; " to raise funds to erect a monument in honor of daptain Jacobean May, tto discoverer of Cape May: Maaars. E. W. Lloyd, J. Clifford Wilson, J. Warner Hutohina, J. F. Jaooby, Adam Suelke, J. Spieer Learning, A. W. (Continued on Third Page)
