THE VEILED IDOL In those days certain prophets arose, Who followed strange gods, and raised Up one which they falsely named Science, knd the king of that country and many of his people were deceived. They bowed down before it, and worshipped it, and to do honor unto it the king summoned skilled workmen from all parts ' Of his kingdom, and commanded that a great temple should be built. In the midst of the temple was made 0 shrine, very beautiful within and with-' out, and richly adorned with precious atones, and within the shrine was set a fair, golden image, and before the image Was hung a veil of purple bordered with fine needlework. The kipg saw all and rejoiced, and !• gathered together a great company to the unveiling of the idol. When all Were assembled in the temple, at the bound of the trumpet the king" stood forth, arrayed in all his splendor, and be J drew the silken cord, which held the veil | Of purple, whereupon it fell from before the shrine, and there was a great silence and amazement and fear came upon all. The fair golden image lay shattered and broken, and in its stead was raised Up a figure of coarsest clay. The color Of its raiment was scarlet, as though dyed with blood, and it was of such proportions that the shrine could scarce Contain it. A sharp sword gleamed in : the uplifted hand, and the face of the Image was as the face of a devil — for ovil the like of it had never been seen. 1 A mocking smile sat upon the lips, and , the light from the glistening jewels, j 1 Which ornamented the shrine, seemed : to ;be reflected in its eyes, which shot ' forth glances,: so fierce and threatening • that children , wailed and clung to their 1 mothers, whose faces were of a deathly , « paleness, and strong men were shaken as ' trees in the blast. Whereat the <hunte- 1 bance of the king was seen to darken, ' ' and he drew again the silken cord which 1 held the veil, and it Yell, and the idol 1 Was hidden from all. The king also sent forth soldiers that they should bind and < bring unto bim the men who had broken < his fair golden image and set qp the < Idol of clay (but though they searched l the kingdom diligently none. could they t find). Then were singing and dancing i and feasting in the temple until the < morrow. \ Then the king and his people remcm- 1 bered no more the terrible face behind 1 the veil. Neither heeded they, nor did 1 they care that the pain of the dumb r Creatures, which the priests offered up I daily in the temple while alive, wifh « strange end horrible torture of many r kinds, was great. They hardened their r hearts and stopped their ears, saying t one to another: 'Have not the prophets of the veiled idol promised long life to us and to our children, end that sickness shall trouble us no morel Tush! Let the animalB suffer, why should We regard It?" So the land was steeped in Innocent blood, and the shrine of the idol ran red with it. At which the anger of the Lord was kindled, for the pitiful moaning of the living sacrifices ascend perpetually to his throne, and the idolatry of the people, and their selfishness, were hateful in His eyes. In His wrath He smote them with a fearful plague such aa neither they nor their fathers had known and the hand of the Lord was heavy upon them. In every house which had bowed down and worshipped in the tem-

ple of the veiled idol there was weeping, "from the beggar's hut, yea, even unto the king's palace, and the mourners j went about the streets. At night, as the king lay upon his j couch, he saw as in a vision a vast . multitude of dumb creatures, which i could not be numbered, but were as the . Bands of the sea. Verily he saw all, , from the greatest" unto the least, that t had been offered up in the temple, and the sound of lamentation which went , up from them could not be endured for .. the anguish of it. There was not one , whole among them. They were wounded L and maimed, and bleeding. Some having . bodies so hacked and mangled that they ! bore no semblance to aught that lives, and their kind could not be distinguished. Unto one was given a voioe, and he , lifted it up with an exceeding bitter cry, I saying, "0 King, live forever! Were we , not also thy subjects? How hast thou I dealt with us!" Whereupon tfie heart of , j the king became as melted wax. He I ! groaned aloud and rent his clothes, and , cast himself upon the ground, and lay , prostrate upon his face until the morning. for he was sore vexed and troubled, I and his iniquity was heavy upon him. I In the morning he arose and com- ■ manded that the false prophets and , priests of the veiled god should be taken, and bound hand and foot, and carried to the temple, and that there before the shrine of their deity they should be cut in pieces while alive, and offered up in like manner as they Jiad sacrificed the dumb creatures. All was done as the { king had commanded, and those who j stood by marveled and were astonished, , for among them was found none having hearts of flesh, but all Were of stone. Furthermore he commanded that the of these men should be blotted | out and remembered no more forever, I and that none should have compassion them, inasmuch as they had hark- ' ened not to the, voice of pity, and mercy they cast down and trodden under Then a great furnace was built, and : the veiled idol was cast intq the midst of the flames, and the temple was burned to ashes, and there was fasting and praying for a space of many days, until the anger of the Lord was removed, seethat they had repented, and had cast out the evil among them. The of the lord w.s no longer turned : them, and the plague was stayed. ' and rest came to the troubled I Yea, they came also to the rem- j . nant of dumb creatures yet remaining I alive, which had escaped the cruel hands and sharpened knives of those who had ; raised up a false god, and called its i Science. — Mary Cmige Yarrow, in j ' the Journal of Zoophily. • m 1 OVER e« YEARS' Oh^^K^experience ^■^^^■Ftnadc MARKS 'nUPHv Designs Copyrights Ac. ^AnrOMMOfflns uMebml dtucrigUon mar f .
