Mre^ Sally Davis, Whose Husband Com- . minded in War of 1812, Dead in Her 1 98th Year. Mrs. Rally Davis, widow of Colonel : Samuel Boyer Davis, who was in com- 1 mand of the forces defending the Delaware Bay and River from attack by the Britieh in the War of 1812, died recent- I ly at th^jiomr of her son, Sussex D. Davis, lfflfc Spruce Street. She was in Eer ninety -eighth year. With the passing of Mrs. Davia Philadelphia has lost one of the few remaining links between the social life of the present and of the Philadelphia of generations ago. The Davis residence was at Delaware Place, near Wilmington, but about 1830 Colonel Davis took up abode in Philadelphia. He was active in public affaire, serving in the State Legislature for two terms. Mrs. Davis was a leader in the city's eocial life, and was noted for her beauty, wit and chsrminjr manners. She preserved her interests in her friends almost until the end. Mrs. Davia was born in Wilmington January 14, 1816. She wis the daughter of lieutenant Edward Jones, United States Navy. Her mother's maiden name I was Jeannette Moore, the Moon* having, settled in Delaware in 1726. — - - '

He was the owner of extensive sugar plantations and aocumy ulated a fortune which placed him among the wealthy men of his day. He 8 had retired from active life when the War of 1812 began, but he offered his services to the United States and was placed in command of the Delaware River and Harbor defenses. For his'defence of Lewes, Del., against the British fleet, under Admiral Beres'ford, Colonel Davis received a gold '• sword from the State of Delaware. Mrs. Davis is survived by two sons 1 and a daughter. They are Delaware Davis, of Haymarket, Va., the son at whose home she died and Mrs. William B. McKean of Louisa, Va., whose husband was a great grandson of Governor Thomas McKean.
