( ATHLETIC CONTESTS. ^ The Second County School Annual Athletic Meet, under the auspices of the Cape May County School Athletic league, will occur on the new county fair grounds, at Court House, on Saturday, May 9th, 1914, and will be a much more interesting affair 1 than was the first meet which occurred last year. Each of the j contestants will wear a number which can be plainly seen from ] the Grand Stand and programs have been prepared so fiiat each J contest may be thoroughly clear to spectators and the winners and 1 lexers easily identified. The running track is very much broader j and better than that in the old ground and in some of the contests | there will be fourteen runners abreast. A large space, directly i in front of the grand stand has been fenced off td present the in^, trusion of spectators andAhe jumping, pole-vaulting, shot putting, 1 etc., will occur here anefbe perfectly visible. Programs will be sold on tht^ ground at two cents each, to ; pay the expense of producing them. A new feature this year will be the folk dances by groups" of girls from each of the High Schools of the county, each to delineate a different fij&re or scries. These will occur on the raised platform near the judges stand. The admission fee for pupils of the schools will be 10 cents and for others 25 cents. Only theBe latter will be for sale in the grounds. Pupils must obtain their tickets of the principal or teachers of their school. The pupils' tickets cannot be used by anybody but pupils. The county school colors are purple and gold and should be worn in some shape. Each High School, has its colors and these will be very nfuch in evidence. The new county sehool pennant will be floated for the first time from the flag staff on the grounds, beneath Old Glory. Two thousand people or more are sure to lie present on this occasion and every section of the county represented. * ' Medals are to be awarded to individual contestant^, and ban- j ners .for the relay running races, and the folk dances. A silver . cap, which is now held by Maddle Township High School, will go to the school gaining the greatest number of points. In addition to this the Princeton Association of Philadelphia, has .agreed to entertain during the Inter-Collegiate Track Meets to be given at Princeton, May 16th, paying the entire expense, the three boys obtaining the greatest totals in the Cape May County Meets. No boys or girls in High Schools or in the Grammar Grades, are permitted to enter any of the contests or dances unless their class rank is such as to indicate strict attention to their studies. The beneficial effects upon the schools of these annual contests are recognized by every teacher or school officer who is observant and they are entitled to the earnest support of every pub-lic-spirited citizen. Cape May County was the first county to attempt an enterprise of this kind. 1 • SPELLING AND ENGLISH CONTESTS. The Cape May County School Spelling Contest which was so successful last year, will be held on May 2nd, and the number of. entries is large Two sontestants are allowed to each sehool. tin the same day there isJnJ>e a High . School Contest in English, for each HighWBchool Class, Freshman, Sophomore, Junior, and Senior. The subjects have been supplied by A. B. Meredith, Assistant Commissioner of Education, assigned to secondary schools, and medals will be awarded to best in each class. Each High School is authorK need to enter one student for each class. All of these contests will open at 10.45 o'clock. These are not to be open to the public nQr to anybody excepting the contestants, the committees, ushers, judges, etc. The County Superintendent will preside over the falling Contest and Miss Lucy E. Corson, over the English Contest. The Spelling Contest will occur in the Auditorium of the High School Building, at Court House, and the English Contest ia the Eighth Grade room of the grade building.
