MUST ENFORCE SPEED LAWS FINE CAPE MAY COUNTY ROADS TEMPT AUTOMOBILISTS TO j BREAK SPEED LAWS— DEATH I AND ACCIDENTS CAUSED BY VIOLATION OF THE LAW. The fine country roads of -New Jersey have become so unsafe for the people of this community who help to build and maintain them, that it is dangerous for anyone to enter upon tbem. Suite- , rouB automobilea travel to this resort, | especially at week-ends, and many of j tbem without an atom of respect for J speed laws or humanity. The many j accidents recently have been caused by ' the violation of 6peed laws. Within the last few months there have been in j Cape May at least two deaths resultant from this violation of the law, and j within the recent past there have been I two collisions which have not resulted : fatally, but nevertheless caused by the ' same disregard for the law. The writer, a few evenings ago, stood I I in front of a prominent hotel, and heard three men who had just emerged, after entering an automobile, remark to the | driver, "Now Go Like ." This is the kind of recklessness that | causes the serious accidents and if ■ these conditions are long allowed to ex- I ist, the situation will become intolcr- I able. Hundreds of drivers violate the . speed laws because of ignorance or thoughtlessness, but that is no excuse. These offenders must be punished as well as the more flagrant breaker of ] the law. The time for the authorities | to aet is now. Everybody knows that j I there is no danger of speed laws in this 1 j resort, or of the State being too strict- I ] )y enforced. The danger decidedly lies ! in the opposite direction. | I J. S.
