NATHAN DAVIS MEETSDEATH YOUNG MOTORCYCLIST COLLIDES WITH P. AND R. FREIGHT TRAIN AT MILL LANE CROSSING SUFFERED BROKEN NECK AND FRACTURED SKULL. 1'°* Ail "Kl >'.-i»t,W>K «"«J ' Nullum Darin, Jr., aged : M years, was iustuutly killed early this morning Ay running head-on into a Philadelphia and Heading freight 'train at Mill Lane crossing on the Sehellenger's ' Lauding road. The accident occurred within a stone's throw of the Pennsylvania Railroad crossing where, two years ago, five person*, including Mr. and Mrs. Mer- ; genthaler and their son-in-law and daughter, and their chautfeur, all of : Baltimore, were instantly killed while! enroute to the Hotel Cape May. Young, Davis, who was a conductor employed by the Cape May, Delaware Bay and SeweJ's Point Railroad Company, finished his work at one o'clock Saturday afternoon. He went to his home and later returned to this city. He spent the evening with a young lady and about ^midnight started for his home on his motorcycle by the way of the Sehellenger's Landing road. Motorcyclists familiar with the road wilt recall at the railroad crossing that there are switch lights. It is supposed that the young man mistook the j light on the locomotive for these lights, and in attempting to cross crashed ! head-on into the train. No one witnessed the accident, but W. H. Maxwell, the brakeman on the i train saw a ball of fire which later I proved to be the exploding presto-lite | tank. This caused him to make an in- i i, vestigation. When he returned he saw ] IS the mutilated body lying about seventy j r. five feet from the roadway. Mr. Maxwell notified the local police j . luHU'iuartcr* and then called Coroner | d \V. II. Thompson, wlio arrived a short; time later. Under the direction qf the j d O'rouer 'he body was brouglit to the . morgue here. 1. 1 lu addition to a broken neck. Davis . suffered a three-inch .-ompoiind fracs ture of the skull, either mie of Which . I would have moa.it instant death, and = I the fracture of two rib*, four inch lac ' oration of the sealp. right shoulder | crushed and numerous other smaller I lacerations and bruises. j It was suggested that both Ih- liainj I Tlic two were travelling at right angles and it is thought that Davis' body was hurled against the ear just ahead > I of the steps which caiis.-d his hotly to ! he catapulted at right angles to the ' i direction he was travelling. - Coroner Thompson has appointed the , 'jury which will determine in what man- i nor the young man came to Iiis tragic - end.
