experimental shipments of jersey peaches to boston With a heavy crop of peaches- throughout New Jersey, anf in southern peach districts, and a comparatively light crop ;n tlie New England States in 1914, early 1 indications pointed to a good peach ! market in Boston during August. ' Aa -the season developed it became etident tliat there would be a great bulk of small to medium-sized peaches Ate to overloading of the trees, and to | the weather conditions which prevailed ' ' in the1 early season, and that if this I bulk of small fruit waa not widely distributed il was" likely greatly to affect the market price, even in sucji cities as Philadelphia and New York. After the ' New Jersey 'feach season really opened conditions soon proved these early indications to be correct, and the New Jersey Experiment Station began to make arrangements for trial carload shipments to Boston. Owing to' the fact that the number of trees of all varieties of peaches except Elberta are in quantities of less than 100 trees in the Station's orchard at Vineland, it was not possible to consider carload shipments until August 22nd. Beginning with that date several hundred crate- „f fruit were available for shipment nt almost any time. Several members of the Vineland Peach p rowers' Association expressed their desire to co-operate, and to add their shipments to those of the Station in filling the cart. One car was shipped to Boston Sate urday, August 22nd, and was sold Mon- 1 day, August 24th. Two cars wen ehipped Holiday, August 24tli. and were sold Wednesday. August 20th. Shipments were made in refrigerator tars, iced at Vineland and re-ieed at •Jersey CSty. Fruit was accepted from "the various growers regardless of. variety and grade. The only requirement , was thai the fruit be parked in (ieorgia The following varieties were shipped: | hlberta. Belle of Crorgia, Champion. | Old Mixon and (apt. Ede. The responsibility of the shipment^ was assumed by Prof, M. A Blake.
