school children as census takers School children will hcanK the official agricultural firaii taker* in New Jersey and probably throughout the United State*, if a pi in to be tried out by the ■ Turlington county board of agriculture this fall, proves an successful aa its promoters anticipate. m The en tin: rural school eyetem of the county will be oand in securing information <>f great value to the state and federal departments of agriculture and , when the work is completed it 'is said that Burlington county will hare the most complete classified record of any farming district in the country. The i?!<-a is to divide each school district into sections, one of. which is assigned to each of the|higbe«t ranking pupils. The information the county 4oard will a«k to gather will include the number of members in each farm family: the number of acres Under cuP ti vatic-- and the " area planted respectively i si hay. corn, wheat, white potato**, alfalfa, fniit of various kinds and the amount of livestock. Special informa*1'?: in regard to the great peachgrowing industry of the county also will be sought The -o\ rnment. heretofore, had been •ompell? I to rely upon individual farmers in -neb JLtoct fillingout and returning (piestsnn blanks sent to them by the department. The fact that leas than two-thirds hare been returned and that half of the returns have shown Httle care in the gathering of crop statistics. has made the totals of questionable value, but upon these figures in every state the federal department has , been compelled to base its reports. The new plan was evolved by Henry George, founder of the George Junior Republican, who haa tried it out in Tomkins county, N. Y. hTe idea met with instant approval of the Burlington county board of agriculture and at the request of Secretary Henry H. Albertaon, the scheme waa presented this week to the school teachers of the county at their annual institute, by Mr. George. The value of the edncational side of the plan was emphasized by Mr.. George The work assigned to pupils, usually as a r<U(ard of merit, trill bring them in closer .and more appreciative touch , with the industrial activities of their aection. It is impossible to over-esti-mate, lie says, the importance of making the pupils feel their responsibility in co-operating with the government in collecting statistics of such value. I ~
