THE EXPLOITS t OF ELAINE — 3 "The Exploits of Elaine" will be the motion picture feature in | Armstrong's theatre in February and the first installment of the ■tory will be found in the next issue of the Star and Wave. It should be doubly interesting to .Cape May people because Arthur B. Reeve, the author, whose work is well known to all magazine readers, was one of the editora(of the Cape May Daily Star in 1899-and 1900 and probably made his start here as a journalist and writer. His as a journausi ana writer, nis

detective stories in the Cosmopolitan and other magazines are masterpieces and the scientific data included in them, accurate and reliable. In a recent letter to him, a friend jokingly asked if this were true and he was promptly and positively informed that the ■tory element did not extend to the science part of the narrative, which was always exact and capable of demonstration by anybody sufficiently versed in scientific lore. Mr. Reeve was a graduate of Princeton University and one of the most brilliant of the galaxy of editors associated^ from time to time, with the Cape -May Daily ' Star, who have since achieved marked distinction in other fields. "The Exploits of Elaine" will be fonnd to be well worth reading and seeing. COUNCIL PROCEEDINGS (Continued from fint page.) bid for this work, and then made an informal request that thh lowest bids be rejected on the ground that they were unsigned by the contractor. On motion of Mr. Wentzcl the bids ' were referred to the proper committee ' for tabulation — with instruction to present same before Council on the next ' meeting night which was set for Thurs- ' day of the same week. SPOTS BEFORE THE EYES The prevalence of this condition has given rise to a great many curious ideas. Almost everyone either sees fixed or floating spots at times or hears some friend complain of these conditions, so that it is not strange that many popular misconceptions have arisen. The commonest form of floating spots are those which are known by the name of museae volitantes, an old which indicates how long the condition has been observed. These are tiny transparent chains, or strings, which are seen especially on a white or brightly illuminated field. They persistently float in the line of vision, and though a shake of the head may carry thein ■ out of the way, they, at once float , hack again. These spots are prob- ; ably caused by the remains in the fluid part of the eye of certain cells which should have been completely absorbed in the devel- ! opment of the eye. They never It ad to impairment of vision and, as before stated, are perfectly transparent. Other floating spot ; due to eobweb-like masses of ' inflammatory material which are ' thrown out into the fluid of the ' eye by some low grade inflamma- ' tion. These spots usually obscure the vision, which js their great point of difference from the form- 1 er ones. It is. of course, very important to find out in any ease 4 I whether the spots are due to in- j lamination, or not, and this can I only he done by a skilled observer. is a prevalent idea that the wearing of a dotted veil may leave " permanent spots in the field of 1 vision. While the dotted veil may a source of strain by causing the r to pull on the eye muscles order to avoid the obstruction to vision; it certainly is not the ease that the dots or any other object seen, can be permanently photographed on the nerve tissues of the There is only one exception to Jhis statement. Many people who have carelessly looked too much at the sun, generally in observing the eclipse, have actually produced a slight inflammatory change in the retina, so that there is always a blurry spot wherever look. But it is doubtful if g light less brilliant than the can produce a permanent spot, and certainly a dark object can not do so. Meadow View farm Vegetables and Produce ERMA, N. J.
