VALUE OF A PLAN IN I VEGETABLE GROWING j Mr. Rosoce DeBaun, , extension specialist in vegetable growing at | the New Jersey Experiment Sta- I tion, claims that greatest success I in the growing of vegAbks in the j home garden or on the farm can j had only by following systematically a well thought out plan. Now is the time to make such a 1 plan. Make an outline map of different fields to scale. On it indicate the location and amount of each vegetable to be grown, proper date f> f sowing or setting, companion and succession crops and the direction of the rows and distance lietween the rows. The first advantage of the plan is that it enables the grower to just how much room is available for each kind of vegetable. Witlfthis in mind, the right amount of seed may be ordered early and thus the best grade secured. Delay in planting time 1 may be fore-stalled by such' a method. If a grower is to plant quite extensively of a certain crop early buying will give him opportunity, if he so desires, to have the seed tested for geSbination at the State Experiment Station. Succession of crops juay be arrangedfor also in a systematic plan so ihat the ground will not be idle during any period. One crop will succeed anothed to advantage and provision may he had for the all important cover crops. Nlanv vegetable growers who neve used lime will find a map or plan a decided advantage. A plot of ground may be limed and arrangements ipade to grow on that plot crops which respond most readily to lime. For instance, spring spinach could be succeeded with egg plant the latter part of May, crimson clover being shown the egg plant about the fifteenth of August. Early' garden peas could be followed about July with such lime-loving crops as cabbage, beets, celery and cauliflower. Some of the vegetables ^ which do not respond so readily 1 lime include carrots, corn, radishes. tomatoes, strawberries and potatoes. Just how much space is to be allotted to each (jrop. the nuinlier of plantsto grow or buy. where to manure to the best advantage and how much fertilizer is necessary, may readily he determined use of a plan. Early maturity, so that crop harvesting may he equalized and thus a constant, study of the various vegetables insured either for home consumption for market, is another advantage. This in itself prevents the profit -reducing condition of oversupply at certain periods. A well defined plan will permit of the keeping of valuable records as to the planting and harvesting dates of eaeli crop. Records of yields, financial returns and crop treatment may also be kept. With yearly record of this, nature, the grower may tell pretty accurately just how long it takes any particular variety to come to maturity and may apply this knowledge in plan- : ning succession crops. Such a permanent record will aid also in planning rotations from year to year. Cabbage and cauliflower for example, should not be planted in New Jersey on ground where either lias been produced for several years, as the roots will probabe infected with club root and the crop ruined. A contractor would not think of starting to build without a plan; neither should the vegetable grower thing of lieginniug his operations without a preconceived meth. od of procedure.
