FARM DEMONSTRATION NOTES y POTATO TROUBLE I There seems to be quite s lot of a cer1 tain disease in potato plots throughout - the county; most serious contrary to most instances where the second crop seed was planted. This disease appears to be so called

"Black Leg" and is one of the severe disease of the potato which domes to us on the seed and was quite severe throughout the Btate during 1913. The disease came from Europe. The affected plants are undersized, very erect, pale in color and the leaves tend to curl upward. The stems below the ground and for a short distance above ground, become black and decayed. The organism is said not to persist 1 in the soil in the northern potato growing districts. The disease also causes < a rot of the tuber. CONTROL — Seed treatment with . formaldehyde or corrosive sublimate. Mr. Roscoe De Bunn, Extension Spec- ' ialist in Vegetable Growing, spent a couple of days in the county last week ] with Demonstrator Thrasher, arranging demonstrations with several farmers for the penrention of tomato and melon blight. — With tomatoes application of Bor- ® deaux Mixture will be made a^ intervals I of about ten days apart beginning sometime around July 4th. q To prevent melon blight an application of "Nitrate of Soda" will be given to the vines when the melons are about the size of an egg. This will invigorate ^ the tines at the time when they are in the weakest condition. We all know that healthy plants will resist disease better than weak, sickly An application of Arsenate of L.-a.I, ® <2% pounds paste form) to 50 gallons ~ of water will make the striped hf-tle* " on your vines very sick. Fortunately the Onion Thrip has .lone & very little damage this season owing to wet conditions which are anything but favorable for their development; otherwise we would have arranged to show that Black Leaf 40 would send them to — a new home. J_ GEORGE B. THRASHER.
