BISHOP TALBOT AT ST. JOHN'S : „ . i LARGE AUDIENCE HEARS ABLE J DISCOURSE BY PROMINENT DI- . VINE— MAKES SPIRITUAL APPLICATION OF NATURAL LAWS— 1 TEXT A GOOD ONE. From Monday's Daily Star and Wave, j St. John's Church, at the corner of Washington and Franklin streets, is, every Sunday, the shrine to which thefashionable folk of Cape May's cottage colon J make their Sabbath morning's ^ pilgrimage*. These pilgrims, however, ^ not go np thither after the manner aud fashion of those famous pilgrims ^ who journeyed to a certain sacred shrine J in the- days of Chaucer, nor like those who traveled bare-foot, across lofty mountains and sun-burnt deserts to Palestine, in the days of the Crusader, ^ nor do they dress in the mode and fashion of the pilgrims who made Plymouth Rock renowned. They come to St. John's in their costly limousines and ' motor cars, attended by high-salaried ^ servants. My Lady attends morning prayer, and listens to a scholarly dis- g course, dressed in the lu-ights of faahioD. Yesterday morning, the crowd of fashionables was larger than usual, and j Hie church was crowded, long before the services began. The attraction was the Right Rev. Kthelbert Talbott, D.D.,- : I.L.I)., Bishop of the Diocese of Beth- ^ loliem. Bishop Talbott is one of the ' best known and most prominent divines 1 in America, and those who go to hear him preach are never disappointed. His sermon on Sunday morning was a beau- * tiful and lucid exposition on the Mas- ^ ter's words to Xicodemus, found in the eighth verse of the third chapter of St. , John's Gospel. "The win.d Idoweth where j it listeth, anil thou liearcst the sound thereof, hut canst tell whence it cometh aud whither it goeth; so is every one j that is born of the Spirit." The logic and Hie beautiful imagery of the bishops g sermon was listened to throughout, with , the closes attention. The great preach- , cr never resorts to the cheap, ten-cent vaudeville methods of trying to attract v crowds, so often resorted to by men of less ability. His sermon was worth lis- f tening to as a literary production, aside from the religious truths and philosophy | taught. The " sja-aker very aptly com- ( I Hired the wind to which t'hrist called | |he attention of Xicodemus to the sea j breezes of t ape May, which are enjoyed 1 so much by tlie members of St. John's ^ that ever fell ujK.n human ears. The reason Xicodemus carny to I'hrist-bV
night was because,- like so m^rns^eoplc q of the present day, lie did not 4juve the courage of his esniictions. The wind is j. a symbol of liberty. This liberty, however, does not signify Jicense, but just (| as the wind is always under the con- s trol of God, who made the winds, so w is the christian life, though free, under (j His control. This liberty is one of beau- ^ , tiful and* gracious service. We speak of j. the work and the play of the wind, j)Ut (| the wind is always rendering service to g| i the human race. So the christian life fl should constantly be one of gracious ser- y ' vick th his fellow men. „ Another • feature of the wind, is the sound. The music of the.windSs caused bv movement and obstruction- If there were no obstacles in the path of the <, wind, there would he no sound produced, ,| and no one would hear the music of the t wind. The christian life needs obstacles and bhstriictions, in order to bring out v Us sweetest and purest music. With- ,, out diflicultie* and hindrances, man would be a mere jelly fish spiritually. ~ Men attain greatness in social. -political « and financial world by meeting and v overcoming difficulties and obstructions. The wind presents a beautiful variety „ of sounds; there is no monotone, no , sameness that tires. " So there are many | types of spiritual conquest; One Spirit hut many manifestations. Some men , find Christ and are born again, during a f period of great spiritual emotion, when a whole community is aroused, and . everybody is talking religion, ' while , others are born again, in a christian ; home, and brought up under religious influence. . The mysterious origin of the wind is anoHier notable feature. It may blow from either point of the compass, Irom off the ocean, or the mountain tops, so people have found Christ in various ways. Some through tlie .prayers of a mother, another through a sermon, or the word of a servant, or perhaps by some tragedy or great soitow. ~ The destiny or goal of the wind is [fronted with the same mystery of the secrets of God- The evideuce of the fact and truth of spiritual life is all around us. The love of God id the human heart is proof of the great spiritual truths, though they, may be mysterious to us. I . Children Cry FOR FLETCHER'S C ASTO R I A

West Cape' May, a beautiful hydrangea, which measures fifteen inches across in one direction and fourteen inches another. This is the largest one reported so far, and is a very fine one. PETTY THIEVERY GOING ON. Saturday's Daily Star and Wave Resident* of Cape May are being great ly annoyed by petty thieves, who take plants anfl jardinieres from porches and doorsteps. Several complaints have made. This sort of mischief ought to be looked after and stopped, if possible. MOONLIGHT SAILING PARTY Wednesday's daily Star and Wave On Monday evening a crowd of jolly young folks enjoyed a moonlight sailing party and were well entertained by Miss Anna Curtis, who kept them laughing with her wit. After enjoying a fine sail they all collected at Mary Yarncll's, where they ate crabs till near morning. Those on the party were: Miss Waters, Tillie Hughes, Anna Curtis, Dorothy Sheppard, Mary Yarnell, Rae Curtis, Ruth Walters, Miss Keenan, . Art Hand, Geo. Curtis, Miss Chas. Hand, Lemuel Miller, Mr. Cooper. SILK FACTORY AT TUCKAH0E Thursday's Daily Star and Wave At Tuckahoe there is to be implanted new industry and you could not guess what sort in a year, so we will save you the trouble. Silk factory.
