LEWIS T. STEVENS Republican Candidate for State Senator. J
Republican Ticket. : ; . ; f FOR SENATOR, LEWIS T. STEVENS. if ■ of Ospe May City. t FOR ASSEMBLYMAN, f MARK LAKE, c * » u of Ocean CSty. _ , FOR CORONER, ( WILSON A. LAKE, i of Lower Township. j o f WILDWOOD AUXILIARY l RIFLE CLUB ORGANIZED. r TTtis organization is a part c tbe t Wildwood Auxiliary Coast Artillery t which was formed in January, 1915, and j Is composed of members living on Five Mile Beach. Drills have been held ^ weekly except during the summer j months. Tbe Batulion has made sev f eral public appearances, one on Decors- j. iion Day, another upon the occasion of t tbe visit of Governor Fielder to Wild- r wod, acting as bis honorary escort, and , , leading tbe Firemen's Day parade. Tbe , membership is now 52, of whom 35 are j uniformed. The organization was form- j. ed for the purpose of promoting rifle j practice and military instruction in ^ both infantry and artillery. Recently B it became a member of tbe National , Rifle Association of America and as such '■ £ baa been recognized by both the State j. and National Governments. The Chief c of Ordnance of the UaKed~Stat« Army has issued guns, ^munition and sup- o plies for target practice. Ground baa been p recurred near Rio ( Grande, and a rifle range known as the ^ Wildwood Range, is net ring completion. This will give Cape May County the distinction' of having tbe only rifle range in tbe state south of Baa Girt, and it is located where easily ' accessibly to all parts of the county. The organization is open to all who wish to enjoy the privileges of the range and 1 the young men of the county should avail themselves of this opportunity to leara the use of high powered guns. * Th# range will be in charge of men 1 who have been ra the National Guard 4 and United States Army during- the " Spanish American War. The opening of the range will be an important event for tbe County and will be under the supervision of Adjutant General 8adler of the State of New Jersey or other officers representing the State accompanied fay an expert marksman. The men of Cape May Oounty have always shown a patriotic spirit and wbBs . yet a part of thc.Celoniea declared their independence Bf the King by signing a declaration that has becom* historic. Tbe same, blood courses through their *- veins still and when it was hinted that C there was a lack of preparedness among the people to defend themselves against attack this same spirit prompted some of our young men to organize and show « that they were ready and willing to d»fend their homes and families and to their honor be it aaid the citizens of , Cape May Oounty again were among the Ar»t to respond to the call for prep i red- • _-/ '
i Beba. The office** in command are: sj ; , Captain, E. Harrison Randolph ; First : Lieutenant , John E ODaniei ; Second ■ Lieutenant, Wm. Carll; Tbird LieutinI. ant, O. I. Black well ; Secretary, Harry 1 i.. tribal*. WE NEED FORTIFICATIONS. Active effort should be put forth to secure fortification* for Two Mile Beach ! and -tbe Cape 'May . sliore. In tbe Government's plan for preparedness against attack by any foreign foe, this is the j side of the bay and sea which needs pro- , lection. Under present conditions a flotilla of troop ships carrying auto trucks and other equipment, could land troops arid force their way to Philadelphia with ridiculous ease. Even slight study of -the European war news will make this apparent to any practical man. In both wars with England this section of the country was raided by British sorties from war vessels, and cattle and other food products carried off. in tbes£ days troops would be landed and pushed forward to Philadelphia and intervening cities. Government officials have been investigating the matter and should be supplied with all the information possible. . Modern guns on this shore could stop . vessels jn the Delaware channel with greater facility than they could be halted by batteries on the Delaware shore because battleships would sail close enough to batteries on the Delaware shore to demolish them, but would find it diffioult to damage as seriously batteries on this shore. The organization of a coast artillery and rifle battalion at Wildwood is a step ia the right direction and there should be a detachment connected with this organization mustered a* Oape May. Lewis T. Stevens, the Republican candidate for Senator, is entitled to the support of every Republican in the county and there is Not the vestige of an excuse ioF withholding this support from him. His record in tbe House of Assembly lias been excellent and he has lauded upon all sides for his faith' attention to duty there. It is within to say that no man who ever represented the county in the Assembly ever made a better record and few have ever done as well. He won his nomination for the Senate in a square, up and Sown battle, with the odds all against him, and his opponents in tbe primary not the slightest reason 'or opposing his election. Of course, he is not pledged to anybody or anything exceptto the Republiccan Party. No man nor set of men holds any strings on him, controls him. If elected he will enter the Senate a fres Republican SenaOf course, also, all sorts of things been done to get- a bold on him, but they have failed. This may be objectionable to the boss element in tbe party but it certainly is not to the rank snd file and the plain everv-day people. This class should turn out and vote and for him for it is upon these that depends. This is an instance of 4 candidate for our biggest office seeking election on his record without the aid of money or political manipulation by pro'essional politicians. Every Repubshould turn out »nd vote tbe ticket this time, if they believe at all in their PWty-Scr v.v-.r-Rubber, stomp pads,. robber stamp ink and numbering machine ink at: Star and Wave Stationery Department.
