Communicated. Mr. Editor: Owing to recent public utterances having reference to the county's present financial condition . which contained a veiled charges of extravagance® on the part of the Board of Chosen Freeholders, and expressions of alarm for the future development and prosperity of the county if certain improvements submitted to the Board for consideration by a large number of influential citizens and taxpayers of the county are undertaken by the oounty and because such public ariticism tends to create an erroneous impression in the minds of those of your readers who have no direct means of obtaining enlightenment upon so important a subject to every" taxpayer, I have prepared the accompanying compare - P tive statements of figures taken from the last obtainable official report of the State Comptroller giving the value of real and perianal property taxable oounty tax rate, amount of funded debt, and the percentage of such funded debt of the value of real and persor.sl property taxable for each of the twenty -one counties of the State of New Jersey for the year ending October 31st, 1914, which will be of interest to your readers as an indication of the true fidelity - of the county officials to the taxpayers' interests and a vindication of the unjust veiled charges of past extravagences on part of the same officials. (§ee Exhibit A). During the period of seven years referred to above, there was expended for new roads and bridges and the maintenance of same the large sum of $90207936, of which $763,610.00 or 84.65% was expended within the limits of the Townships of Lower, Middle, Dennis and Upper, (including West Cape May and Woodbine), to acquire 77 milea of roads previously under Township control, and improve and maintain them aa eounty roads, thereby relieving the said" townships of the expense o' maintenance and enabling them to maintain a minimum rate of taxation for township purposes and $138,469.36 or 15.86%, was expended within the limits of the following coast resorts: Cape May City, South Cape May, Cape May Point, Wildwood Crest, Wildwood, North Wildwood, Stone Harbor, Avalon, Sea Iale CSty and Oeean City, where it has been necessary to maintain a higher tax rate. It is confidently expected that the increase in taxable valuations each year will provide sufficient additional revenue to meet all ordinary requirements without resorting to the expedient of raising the tax rate, and there exists no doubt that only such extraordinary improvements sa can be undertaken and financed without incurring any material advance in the present tax rate will receive favorable consideration by the Board of Chosen Freeholders.
