OFFICE OF FARM DEMONSTRATION ORCHARD PRUNING. Before making the dormant spraying • at fruit trees, it U recommended to hare all th winter pruning done. This redness the amount of surface that i» to s receive an application of spray mater- a lal and also makes the operation of J spraying easier and cheaper. u In order to' do rapid and intelligent r pruning one should be somen hat fam- t iliar with the principles of plant 0 growth; accompanied with experience in a pruning. li a It is known that winter pruning tends to increase wood growth while summer j pruning chocks the wood growth and en- £ courages ftuitfulness Therefore viborous growing trees should be pruned ' lightly during the dormant season and j more severely in the growing season. ( Accordingly weak growing trees may be < pruned severely during the dormant sea- "1 .son; however we should never summer ( prune a weak growing tree unless sev- ( erel main branches seem 'to be making f only a slight amount of upright growth. 1 In such s case we can take out all of j these branches but those desired to ( form the permanent top or support of the tree thereby throwing all the rigor < into the few remaining branches. J In pruning aim to keep the centers of your trees, well open thereby making it i possible for the sunlight to hit the oen- I ters as well as the outside of the trees. j Plenty of sunlight and a good dr- , eolation of air through the centers of the trees is necessary in order to get a large well colored fruit and an open 1 tree through which we have a good , circulation of air is less liable to blight. Young trees " making a sufficient 1 amount of growth need usually to be pruned aiming to grow a well balanced tree of a sturdy construction. 8elect from three to five well placed brandies to form the main support of the tree taking out all other branches,, also cross branches tending to filLop the" * centers of the tree or interfering with oi e another. Heading back in' the dormant season is only necessary when too much growth has been made or to build a more symmetrical tree. Bearing fruit trees require little or no heading back after the. second year of bearing,, providing they have boen pruned properly up to the bearing age. In pruning older trees take out all dead wood first, then cut off branches that tend to grow- towards the centre of the tree also any poorly placed branches that rub or interfere with the growth of a well placed bra"di. Branches hanging low and materially interfering with cultivation may be cut off Jiowayef -extension harrows make it v possible to work under low headed trees. Wtawver taking off a side branch from 'any tree be' sure lo cut it close to the main branch from w-hieh it grows. Wherever a stub is left, decaying of that stub is bound to follow and will in time rot down into the main trunk or heart of the tree. If in taking off a branch either large or small we w-ill make a clean close cut, the wound will perfectly heal over in time depending upon the rate- of growth being made by the tree. Paihting of the wounds is only advised 'Upon slow growing trees from Which large braches have been cut. . TheVO'ce of I arm Demonstration will within rf short time hold several public demonstrations in orchard pruning. Notice of these footings will be given I in a later issue of this paper If It .seems impo«nibble for you to attend kny of these public demonstration- i in pruning the. writer wiil vi-it von up- | the doVired information and furthermore prune up a few trees for you.
