IMPORTANCE OF EXPORT TRADE Every dollar of actual money in eirJ cuiation in this country ia tbe baaia of j several dollars of commercial credits. • That is why a relatively small amount I of increase in exports has had such a i tremendous effect in reviving industry j in this country. Immediately ^after the r enactment of the Democratic tariff law our imports increased and our ex- . ports decreased with the result that in I a period of ten months we lost a total of $281,000,000 in our foreign trade bal- , anco. This diminishing balance in our favor caused a corresponding diminution r in comihercial credits, thus injuring industry to the extent of many times $261,000,000. The outbreak of the Eu- . ropean war reversed the situation. Im- _ ports diminished and exports increased . immensely, giving an enormous trade I balance our favor, every dollar of which fufnished the basis for many the amount in commercial credits. The question which now confronts the American people is whether we shall due regard for the beneficial influence of a large favorable trade balance, or shall again throw our markets open under a free trade policy, permitting foreign countries to ship us cheap goods and take away our money. ^3s diminishing in still greater d^ree the amount of available commercial credit, or shall we insist upon the enactment of a tariff based upon protective principles and restoring the substantial basis for prosperity which existed before the Democratic tariff law was enacted.
