Friday, May 12, will be observed 411 over the state as New Jersey day. The idea of this day is to advertise the ' products and spirit of the Jersey pco- ^ pie. r A proclamation by - the Governor re- 1 quests all Jersey people to observe the c day and to decorate the houses and P stores with bunting. In many of the cities of the state " elaborate programmes have been prepared and excellent speakers procured. 1 The day will be celebrated in the public schools by a fine selection of patriotic muidc and in many cases men will speak on the* improvements that the state has made in recent years. The affair will very probably made an annual one and if so we wjl see the improvements jn the state that are rap- • idly taking place that usually do not come to the notice of many people. THE RECENT ELECTION Official returns were made on Monday in the Counties comprising the Second Congressional District, for delegate to the Republican National Convention. The (esult^ were Cozart (Roosevelt), 27 US; Knight. 3200; Lyghtfoot, 1830; Moore 2680. For Alternates there r^ce three can *didaiei- aud two to be elected. - The can didates were Christopher S. -Hand, o Wild wood ; Alfred li. Miller, of Cape May; and Charles D. For being opposed by the Atlantic City organization, Mr. Miller made a most remarkable run. being beaten by only 187 in the district. TAX BOARDS TO MEET The Second Annual Tax Conference of the New Jersey Association of County I Tax Boards will be held at the State House, Trenton, on Tuesday, May 9th. The Association is composed of the 4 members and secretaries of the County Tax Boards throughout the State. The association is a purely voluntary organization, maintained at the expense of the members. The purpose of the organization Is for more efficient administration of the tax laws. At the meeting addresses are made and questions relating to the administration of the tax laws are discussed. The proceedings are published in pamphlet form. Mr. Thomas B". Usher of Hudson County is the Chairman, and William Mack-, sev of Essex County is the Secretary of the Association. BOARD OF HEALTH MEETS j On Monday evening. May 1st, the regular monthly meeting of the Board of was held in the City Hal, with a full attendance with the exception of the Health Officer. f The reports of the various committees included 10 final plumbing inspections. It 'was also noted that during the month of April no health notices were necessary. The Sanitation Committee reported that the Cape Island Creek had been in- . specked and several repairs noted and ^ ordered made in preparation for the sum- ^ season. This committee also report- ^ ed that an inspection of vacant lots ^ about the city had been made to ascertain the need of a clean-up campaign. ; Board then ordered the Health Offi- ^ cor to consult with the City Com mis- , sioners regarding this matter. * Before the Board adjourned a notice was called to their attention to the fact that May 1 was the date to grant garbagc collection permits.

ATHLETIC CARNIVAL TODAY ( The annual county athletic carnival will be staged today at Court House. The meet will include six high schools and many of the grade schools. In addition *o the regular events a ; " number of novel ones have been added including Folk* dancing by the High School girls, potato races and ball throwing by the Grammar School girls. The first year that this carnival was ' held tlyre were about 1000 spectators present, the second and ensuing years about 1300 spectators and this year it is expected" that the new events will encourage additional people to the extent of 2000 spectators in all.

One of the much needed improvementu some parts of our city are the poor sidewalks and curbs. Persons who frequent North street are pleased to notiou that conditions there are being bettepvv ed. The Cape May County Christian Endeavor Union will meet at Tuckahoe on 23rd. All societies are requested to send as many delegates as possible. It is interesting to note that several fringe trees that are common to South Jersey have been planted in Logan Square, during the past week, in order j to introduce them to Philadelphia. Recent reports have it that a new union station will be constructed by the Reading and Pennsylvania Railroads, in . order to accommodate their travel, at ^ Atlantic City. ' Mr. and Mrs. J. We should have said that the building was ready for the equipment, of which is held up on account of pressure of war orders. Mr. Balm hopes to be able to open the plant at an early date. — Ed. Miss Holmes is well known in thil county, having been a teacher at Wildwood for several years. She is a native of South Dennis.
