A PLEA FOR MEMORIAL DAY r On Tuesday, May 30th, the National ( Memorial Day is approaching and wi'l t he otoerved with more increasing reverence because of the great number of our , "Boys in Bine" that hare passed be- t yond the Gates, and whjch they fco'd ( ajar awaiting the rest "of us* I desire in f the moft solemn manner to emphasise j the almost unieersal sentiment of our t nation, that this day is to be devoted t to paying a and but loving tribute to £ the honored dead who so freely gave ^ their lives for the country they loved, and those .who use the~dsy for spirt', [ festivities and means of gain are then by ^ showing a disrespect and indifferent » to k the nation's honored dead and a tok *11 ol t daloyalty to -the cause for which they perished. Memorial day is oU' Nation's great funeral day and as such the laws of thnation should protect it from det '.ration. But alas! they do not do so. One hears mingling with the sweet mui" of j, the dirge the soft tap of muffled Irumu. „ the bugle call for Tights Out", We hear | the hoarse shouts of the fans in the a fields where baseball and athletic sports t of all kinds are taking ^xlace. Again, \ when evening comes, on every side borne . t on the air which stirs the flags in token a of the nation's mourning one can bear r the sound of dancing feet and lively music, with shouts of laughter where a some Memorial day dance is in progress. \ A hideous Ufockery of the sacred pur- g poae of the day. We do not object to j: dancing, games, sports or any amuse- c ment, as the young must have enjoyment and arc entitled to it, but it is all . out of place on Memorial day. In almost every family there is some dear f ones that they love but now laid away. ) Is there any one who would wish to ^ make sport or attend and take part in a , dance on a day made sacred to them by the* death of one near and dear to them. Every human feeling within us cries out . "No!" And still such thing takes place . a Funeral Day set aside by this nation aa a tribute to those brave men whose lives were offered and blood was shed that our country's life might be preserved and our flag might stand today before the world with its honor unsullied and "its field of stars complete. To j the remnane remaining of those soldiers who saved our nation it it a sor- , row to witness every year this day so ligbtlv treated and desecrated.' There- j fore let all refrain fro«)v the n ^ of Me- ( mortal Day as one to make sp/>rt and % . day of jubilee. ys Surely out of 365 days in a year most -Wery one can give one day to show. their ,
respect by refraining from unseemly conduct. We do not really believe these frolon Memorial Day are really intentional, but it is just because the younger generation needs a little education in the history of that day. It is largely the fault of father, mother and guar-, dians of our youth. Nearly three generations have passed since President Lincoln in dedicating our National Cem etery declared "The world will little note nor long remember what we say but it can never forget what they did here." Again, let every place of business and display a flag on Memorial day, be sure that flags are at half mast until 12 M. and after that hour raise them to the top or full mast. A- C.
