THE SCHOOL CONTEST. ANNUAL AFFAIR TAKES PLACE AT TO CKAHOE— LARGE CROWD WITNESSES CONTEST — PRIZES AWARDED. The Ihird Annual Contest and Exhibition of School and Home Culture work, under the auspices of the Home and School Association of Upper Township,, field at Tuckahoe, Saturday, Hay 27th, marked the most enthusiastic of these yearly events. The athletic grounds and school buildings swarmed with eager residents of the township *11 day. During the morning hours the High School Athletic Association conducted a track meet, consisting of running, jumping, pole-vaulting and pipe shouting for the Grammar School boys. As this was an entirely new feature this year, only a few entries were made ; two from jBeesleys Point and four from Tuckahoe; but notwithstanding the little practice given to this sport all the boys did remarkably well. Dare Bobison, of Tuckahoe, won for his school a handsome banner, awarded by Hope W. Gandy. A potato contest arounsed much enthusiasm, and a prize of (1, awarded by Dr. Marshall, was won by Edgar Corson, of Beesleys Point. A free luncheon of sandwiches and . coffee was served in the grove at noon, and «ce cream was sold by the Senior Class, the proceeds going toward the Washington trip fund. The afternoon exercises consisted of ■ .written spelling and rapid calculation by 6th, 7th and 8th grades, and sentence construction and rapid sdditic-n by 3rd, 4th and 5th. Recitation by 7th- and 8th, and reading by the 6th, oral spelling by 3rd, 4th and 5th. Talks by County Supt. A. W. Hand, Prof. J. A. Stackhouse and a greeting from the Mother's Congress to Home Culture girls and others, by Miss A. E. Xiekerson, completed the exercises. The exhibits in needle-work and baking, manual training, handwork and grade papers were exceptionally fine, and worthy of commendation, j- Several special trophies were won by the various schools. Esther .Logergrin won first prize in written spelling and secured (for this ; year) .-<&■ handsome picture for Mar(hallviUe, awarded by Dr. Marshall. * Lizzie Corson won for Palermo, a smaller picture, for oral- spelling, to remain permanently in the Palermo school.
