COUNTY SCHOOL ATHLETICS County Superintendent Hand's address at the high school commencement exercises last week gave some interesting information of the progress of the county schools in athletic sports and the interest shown in them. JWe therefore, present it in JW1 below : "We will now give a little time to national matters, to the National game. It is my function here tonight to perform an annual duty, . one which has always been a pleasant one but which on this occasion is doubly a pleasure because to be performed at home and among the home people. This duty still be interesting not only to the • graduating class, which of right, is the centre of ttraction tonight, but also to the mtire school and to the four co imunities which contribute to its student body and to its support. We are always interested in the successes and the achievements of our representatives in any line of activity. Pour years ago there was organ- _ ized a county schools athletic league of which all six of our county high school became members. Each year since there has been an athletic school meet under its direction in which pupils from all of the high schools and from many of the grammar schools participate. I believe it is now the most popular and successful occurrence in this county during the entire year. Three years ago there was organized a county nigh school base ball league of which each of the high schools of the county became members and entered teams for the annual series of games arranged by the league. These two organizations have had a wonderful effect in increasing interest and attendance in all ; of the schools and in stimulating attention to academic work for under the rules no student may , enter the sports nor become a member of a ball team unless he has reached a certain prescribed standard in his -academic work. It has ' also developed school spirit and a ; school unity in each school which is very marked while the mingling together of high school students from all over the county has de- • veloped a manly loyalty and a sturdy comradeship among them which is gratifying to all observers. . '""They "Strive together mightily but meet and part as friends." Mr. E. 0. Howell, of Avalon, a

5 N member of the Princeton Club, of Philadelphia, thought so much of 8 our base ball organization that he l" secured for us a beautiful silver ® cup as a trophy, the understanding ' being that it should be awarded 8 each year to the team winning the • series and given permanently to '• the team winning it three times. It is known as the Princeton Cup. ° The County League contributes I each year a championship pennant, " in the county school colors and > suitably inscribed, to be awarded 1 h to the team winning the series 1 <• "for keeps." ? We have endeavored to incul- 1 cate the principle that while tro- ' ' phiea are as desirable in sporta as in any of the other activities of 8 life, they ore of secondary importance. Wha» is of prime import- ■ ance is fair play, a refusal to profit ' , by unfair play or unclean stata- , gem or chicanery and I believe it ~ <jan be truthfully said that our tro5 phies have been awarded og every occasion to teams, which has hon- . estly and fairly won them and were therefore fully entitled to c them. There have been as few disputes as could have been possible ' and most of these have not origin1 a ted among our students. J ^The first series of games was won | _ in 1914 by the Middle Township ■ High School team. The second in ' 1915, by the Woodbine High School Team and the third which 1 has just been completed in a not- • able eleven inning game which the [ spectators thoroughly enjoyed, was ■ won by the Cape May High School | Team and it is my pleasant duty' ; to declare this team the champions i : for 1916 in high school base ball. I Therefore, Mr. Superintendent, on [ behalf of Mr. Howell and the '■ Princeton Club of Philadelphia. I have the honor to hand into your i ' this Princeton Cup award- 1 ' ed to your high school team to he i retained one year, unless re-award- 1 ed in 1917 as the result of victories i • yet to be won. | I also award, on behalf of the j ] County High School Athletic] ] League, the championship pennant i j ( which will be delivered as soon as j j ( received. Though ordered three J weeks ago we are told that there will still be some delay because of ^ the scarcity of the riiaterial from which it is to be made, "because of the war." ; In conclusion may I express the hope that the members of this base t ball team who have proven such gallant warriors on the base ball i j field may be equally valiant in the j ( battle of life and win many notable 1 I successes. Thank you for your j attention. ] THE BIGGEST STRAWBERRY • In a batch of strawberries sold j j to a customer recently by John j Speck,' there was found one -which j measured four inchesrin width and ] | two and a half inches in height.
