Franklin Murphy for Senator A Manufacturer to Represent a Manufacturing State in the United States Senate To the Manufacnurers and other Business Men: To the great army of Workmen engaged in various crafts: To All the Voters of New Jersey:
JERSEY is a Manufacturing State. JERSEYS shops and mills, her factories and * ' and foundries, provide a means of livelihood for hundreds of thousands of her population and represent a large share of the wealth of* the State. J^EW JERSEY cannot be prosperous unless her * V people are prosperous, for the people are the State. |^EW JERSEY'S great army of workers, whether * hi factory, field or otflce.-Ycairaot be considered prosperous unless they are regularly employed, unJer favorable conditions, at fair wages. J^EW JERSEY'S manufacturers, her merciants. her business men generally, can not provide profitable employment for the great army of workers unless business is reasonably safeguarded against unfair, world-wide competition. WUCH IS BEING SAID about PREPAREDNESS *** these days — and rightly 90. REPAREDNESS, in a military sense, may well M command the best thought of the country. But there is another form of PREPAREDNESS which al.o demands the attention of v thinking men. and fiat is Industrial and Commercial PREPAREDNESS. *THIS COUNTRY must be prepared to protect its * citizens not only against an invasion of armed foes, but also against the industrial and commercial invasion that is sure to follow the close of tbe war which now has practically all of Europe in its grasp UW HEN THE MEN now in the trenches go back to industrial pursuits there wilf be a veritable flood of products turned into the channel of trade. The natural course of this channel will be toward the markets of this country, and New Jersey workmen, along with their fellows in other States, must be prepared to check thjs flow and preserve to themselves the proper fruits of their own labors. REPAREDNESS in this sense means the selection * of well-qualified, practical, hard-headed business men as representatives in the National Congress
where legislation covering questions of the most vital importance to workmen and business men alike will * have to be considered and enacted. QUCH A MAN is FRANKLIN MURPHY, whose candidacy for the United States Senate was announced last week. pM K- MURPHY' has had many years ' actual experience as a manufacturer. He is the head of the Murphy Varnish Company, which he started and built to a business of national repute. FJE'HAS THE EXPERIENCE necessary to enable * * him to deal with great business questions. ■ R AVTNG COME UP from the ranks himself, his *• consideration for, and treatment of, other workers has been such that there has been no labor trouble between his company and its employees during all the years of their relations. DECAUSE FRANKLIN MURPHY is so splendidly " equipped by nature and by practical experience to know the legislative needs of a manufacturing State, a number of manufacturers and other business men have agreed among themselves to further his candidacy for the United States Senate. ATA MEETING held in^W Robert Treat Hotel, ' Newark. July 13th, which was presided over oy Mr. Peter Campbell, president of the Nairn Linoleum Company, and attends)! by some forty representative manufacturers and other business ^ien^it was resolved to urge the voters of New Jersey to support MR. MURPHY at the primaries Tuesday, September 26 next, because his selection as a candidate is a necessary step toward the election of a sound, patriotic, experienced business man to represent New Jersey in the Upper House of Congress. *¥*HE MANUFACTURERS and business men who are * urging MR. MURPHY'S ELECTION freely admit that they have an interest at stake. This interest is inseparable from the best interests of the great army of workers in this State, for whatever affects the one affects the other, and each is dependent upon the other for mutual prosperity. q
A Vote for FRANKLIN MURPHY at the Republican Primaries, Tuesday, September 26, means a vote for I IIBO TO REPBESENT I MANOftCTURIHG STME II THE UNITED STATES SENATE Paid for by Qscar H. Wheeler, Summit, New Jersey. . ^'±,.1 .J
