R. P. RISLEY. Stone Harbor^ August 28,^1916. • '"4 . - OFFICE OF CO. SUPT. OF SCHOOLS CAPE MAY COUNTY, N. J. Cape-: May Court Honse, X. J., August 28th, llltl. To Boards of Education, Cape May , County, X. J., Ladies and (.entlemen; — I have given no interviews to newspaper men upon the question of dates for opening schools, and views imputed to me in a recent alleged interview were, therefore, not correct. Tbe matter of. fixing the dates for tbe opening of schools is exclusively controlled by the Boards of Education of the various districts. Whenever a Board of Health in any district shall declare an j epidemic, it is the duty of said board to notify the Board of Education "that it is desirable to close said school or schools" e upon receipt of which notice such Board f. " -of Education "may close the schools' un- r der its control." See Section 147, School Law, edition 1914. As a matter of precaution, it probably will be advisable to open schools at a G later date than usual because of the agitation regarding infantile paralysis. It fc my opinion, also that tbe opening of the elementary schools might wisely be postponed every year to the second or third Monday in Septemoer, because invariably tbis month |jroveg to be tbe hottest in tbe year and the least com- A fortable for school going. S If the elementary schools in any district are opened at any date daring Sep- *"! ember, there will be ample time to com- B plete tbe term sometime in June, and no n allowance of time should be claimed for G the reason thai the full term of nine D months is all needed to accomplish the »1 work of the school. M * Respectfully submitted, AARON W. HAND, Oouaty Superintendent, o] "mi. Oe«r. M m
