CROAKERS PLENTIFUL . Handlim- ishcrmen at many point* ■ along the New Jersey cca>t have found a singular a'-d unprecedented condition 1 since early 'ast summer. One of the 1 . feature* ha- been the bi^r catches of eroatera. Ordinarily, these fish do not < put in an appearance in the surf apd ( . alone the shore until well into September, after which they remain until cold weather cornea. This year, the croaker ; appeared at early as the fore part of j , July and have, been in evidence con- ( etantly «incc tbat time, seemingly fn- ' i creasing every week in number and size, i < ' They have been so numerous off shore j i that the pound nets from Sandy Hook ; c to Cape May have been literally choked ' with them, at times, and have never been without great masses ; of them. ' i Fishermen on the piers sit Ooney Island, at Aaburv Park, Ocean Grove, Bel mar, ! : Avalon, Long Beach, Beach Haven, j Tcckerton and other points down the < coast have been getting them in amsz- j < fng numbers, and in all sizes up to 3 1-2 . : pounds apiece. They are not despised ! I either, as a food fish, or from a sportsman's viewpoint, as they are delicious eating when properly prepared, and when they are booked they put up a lively fight until landed. Their flesh is solid but somewhat dry and is comparatively free from bones The dryness can be overcome by baking the fish slowly and with frequent basting, and by the use of onion or some oth,cr savory gravy when they are served. Men who have fished along the New Jersey coast for twenty-five years or njore, botb for pleasure and for profit are authority for the statement that nefcr in "the history of the shore fishing have the croakers been so numerous, so large, to ravenous and strong. At Can- May. where the blttefish. «,-a trout and famous Cape Msv Goodie have not been running strong this year, the ! croakers appear to be especially numer- 1 ou-. This gemey fish hqs been caught literally by the thon-niid by our fisher- ■ men. and tliev sre well liked by the ' people of Capo May. Croakers bring ! from seven to ten (ants a pound, those j large ■. for b oiling b^ng -ol 1 for ! nine and ten cents. COUNTY SCHOOL EXHIBIT NOTFS ! In the rotmfv «eli6ol exhibit at the County fair there were two details not n-entjon-il in la t week's report, because

acUd upon by the committee after other awards were made. They were: Claa» 41— Largest irt*i»fdusl exhibit in fine embroidery, first p]ja^Miss^Sbrma Rodan, Oourt House. i— rce exhibit of beautiful flowers rui-ed and donau-d by Mrs. John PowaU, Court Konse, honorable ni 'nrion. , IN TEE GOOD OLD DA S j • While recently looking «mr - .a.- oL, j old papers sume of tbem l. hundred ytars old, some more and some leas, »t came j across a bill upon which suit had Deen I entered in 1831 and we thought it would j our readers to know the prices ! j of various items in those good old days, , before the advent of the beef trust and ' the cold storage trust and the fish trust ■ I' and all the other old trusts which grind ' the faces of the poqr and rob everybody, j so that a few may count their fortunes ; in millions from the excessive profits-! exacted because of the destruction of \ I competition.
