U-BOAT SCARE 4 OFFSHORE L" CREW OF BRITISH VESSEL READY I) TO LEAVE nr LIFE BOATS UNTIL 5 SUBMARINES ARE IDENTIFIED AS AMERICAN. As the British steamship Panama Transport n eared the Delaware Ckpes ,n very early, last Friday morning tha watoh sighted several undersea craft , taring the vessel. Immediately a warning was sent to all parts of the boat and Captain W. D. Owens ordered the members of the crew to the boats, assuming that the stAmarinfes were German craft. Soon the crews of the three submar- • ines, although it was yet quite dark, P were able to discern that something was wrong on the Transport and signalled • that there was nothing to' fear from the 18 submarines as they were the United States F-2, F-S8, F-40 and F-42 bound for sea on a short cruise. After all excitement bad died down ■ the crew of the Britisher got the vessel under way and they proceeded up the river to Philadelphia where thev were taking a cargo of 7,600 tons of' iron ore •' from Santiago for the' manufacture of war supplies. One of the reasons for the crew of the foreign boat becoming so much alarm - •• ed at the .sight of these undersea craft was that the British war vessels near these waters had sent our warnings to shipping recently of the approach of a Teutonic submarines to tbeae waters.
