NEW JERSEY A GREAT FRUIT AND VEGETABLE STATE Farmers Want Horticultural Building at Agricultural College The name "Garden State" as applied to New Jersey is more frsintisted than most Jerseymen realize. For} instance, how many residents of our | state know that New Jersey produces more half | than all | the Esepniind grown in the United States? Or that | New Jersey truckers: receive honed from the tomato crop than the growers of any other state? Or that the ie is true of asparagus . Or that! ore eggplants are grown in New ersey than in any other state" ex-| pt Florida? | Or that Atlantic Coun-! y is the greatest small-fruit section | in the world? Or that the greatest ! intensive — market-gardening. . section |
Paterson? Or that New Jersey can boast of the largest overhead frrigntion system devoted to intensive market gardening in the world, at the Seabrook Farms, Brideton. New Jersey is exceptionally well situated for the growing of fruits, vegetables, and such crops ms potatoes, The soil and climate are favorable, and with excellent railroad facil; ities and good country reads, lying on the highway between two great cittes. with 20,000,000 people within a radius of 60 miles of the State Capitol, no state has better markets for hortieultral products. The last twenty yearr has seen m marked development of the horticulture of the state. Fromapproximately £12.000.000 in 1899, the annual valne ew Jersey fruits and vermtables (eluding potatoos} lins visen to $17, 000.000 in 1909 and to £80.000,000 in 1917. and last year the value was considerable higher. . In this — develop mont | the growers | have . depended largely upon the | State: College of sriculture — and experiment Station nt New Brunswick for assistance in: meeting the new probleme that are constantly arising. and the horticultural department of the institution has been able to aid very materially in making New Jersey a great horticultural state. Because of the expansion of the industry and the growing demands on the institution, the Legislature is being naked this winter for a special appropiation for a hortleultural buildIng at the State College and Experiment Station, in order that they may render service corresponding with the size of the horticultural interests of the state. The fruit and vegetable growers are urging the passage of the appropiation, and it is expected that the Legislature, appreciating the need, will act favorably on the request
