PRUNING In pruning large limbs in order to facilitate the healing. all wounds should be left smooth. . The saw {should be sharp in order to leave a |clear cut. A cut under the limb should be made first so that when the limb falls it will not tear the bark down the tree. Large wounds which reeult from the removal of branches of considerablle dinmeter, may be protected with advantage by painting the cut surface with-m heavy coat of white lead, the sole object of this precaution is to protect the heartwood from decay until the new growth, thus preventing rot. It oftens happens that old trees have holes in them, thus they are decaying rapidly. | If these trees yield good fruit it will pay to save them. Remove all decayed wood from the cavity, then mix a mortar of 1 part of coment with 3 parts of clean sand, fill the wound with this mixture, which in turn will keep out rain and air.
