___ enna COMMUNICATION Cape May, N. J. March 25th Mr. Editor: B sue of last week I noti a Communication from Captain L. F Smith, in which the Taxpayers are be ing he came to me and asked for true if you were to believe what he +a Now the facts are these. | a a meeting of the Board of Freehoider to Directors, Messrs Bennett and Mus have the old concrete taken out, an secure bids for Painting the Iron wo of the Bridge, there were two bide ceived, one from W. B. Gilbert and ene from L. F. Smith, and none from riediately after the appointment of the Committee by the Board, an agree: ment was made with the said L. F. Smith to remove the broken Cement He worked two or three days on th Cement and took a pob with the Coustal Air Engineer at a higher wage and was gone two days before any of the committee knew anything about his leaving, compelling them to make other arrangements and . hire. other men to do the work Smith promised to do. 1 said to Mr, Smith, when we engaged you to take out the Cement. that the Bridge was to be painted (do you want to bid on the job?. He suid, "I may give you a bid.". After fi inghe cane to me and asked for the Specifications for Painting. 1 loaned him n t und he brought a bid to me that was opened at a Board meeting with Mr Jbert‘s bid. The Board awarded the contract to Mr. Gilbert, not because he was a nephew of Capt. Bennett, but because they believed he would finish the job, and not leave it ax Mr. Smith did on the Cement. There is no money wasted as he claims. | Mr. ert will give the county a good job. If Mr. Smith had treated the Committee right in the work he had, the Board would, no doubt, have given him the Contract f¢r Painting, but he failed to make good on the f job, and they did not care to take chances on any more with him, so awarded the contract to Gilbert. Mr. Smith makes a false statement when he suys that I told him that the Contract was awarded to Gilbert because he was a nephew of Capt, Bennett. 1 told him what the members of the Board said, and that was, "They could not trust him after the treatment he had given them and that Gilbert was a practical Painter and that was their view of the matte ow these are the facts as they exSith has been back four times aftor the Cement work as he has nothing to do. The Specifications: require the Tron work scrapped and washed with Coal Oil. This work could not be done by the bridge tender. He is too old to do. such T. S.
