A BRAVE AMERICAN SOLDIER Sergeant Waldo 8. Basnett, whore home is in Franklin, Massachusetts, has been at the Army general hoxpital No, 11, «ince December | 12th . under treatment for wounds, one of which, the mort serious, is in his face, The wkillful treatment of | the . eminent surgeons on duty there is correcting his injuries so far as they can be and he in looking forward to an carly discharge. There are few men in the mervice, who lived to come through war, who have shown greater heroism or had more hair-ralsing experiences. In proof of his valor he has the French Croix de Guerre . with . two gilt stars and the American distinguished service crous. The citation for the latter states that it has been awarded for "ex» traordinary heroism in action south of Solssons, France, | July 18, 1918. Corporal Basnett volunteered to carry messages through intense shell and gun fire after all of the runners had been killed or wounded. . He . was wounded while carrying a message but continued on in spite of his injuries until it was delivered and re fused to go to the rear for treatment until ordered to do so by‘ his company Commander." The citation for | the | Croix | de Guerre states: "During the operations near the Medeah Faim, from October 8-9 1918, he maintained liaison with isolated troups under the most difficult condi tions braving artillery and | machine gun fire. Stimulated and encouraged his men to the utmost by his exe ample."
