MAYFLOWER DESCENDANTS: IN CAPE MAY CoUNTY By Rev, Paul Sturtevant Howe, Ph.D, Genealogical Articles by the Rector of The Church of the Advent John Howland of the | Mayflower married Elizabeth, daughter of John Tilley, who came in the same famous ship. His daughter Desire Howland married Captain John Gorham, and ‘had a daughter Hannah Gorham who | married Joseph Whilldin, born 1656, died 1735. The descendants of this Mayflower family are numerous in Cape May County, and it is the purpose of these articles, which will ap» pear from time to time, to trace out the lines of the family and intermarried families. The facsimile of the "Waste Book" of Col. John Gorham, {reprinted from the — New | England {Historical and Genealogical Register for April, 1898, shows that Hannah Gorham, the granddaughter of the Pilgrim Howland, and greatgranddaughter of John Tilley also of the Pilgrim [band, moved with her husband Joseph Whilldin to Cape May. She was born in Barnstable, Mass., Nov. 28, 1663. A daughter of Hannah and her husband, Joseph Whilldin, named Hannah married Thomas Leaming, born 1674, died 1723. ‘The date of this marriage is 18th of June, 1701. Their son Thomas Leaming, bom 1718, died 1795, married Elizabeth ____25 April 1740, (License of that date), . Their son Thomas Leaming, born 1748, died 1797 married 19th August 1779. Re becca Fisher. A daughter of this marriage, Lydia | Leaming, | married James Somers Smith, 9th of November 1808, Their son was Henry HolTheir daughter, Eugenia Homer Smith was still living when this record was compiled. Several of the lines have been traced out by the author, and infor-, mation is desired for the completion of the record. If you are d from any of the marriages lipmetwrend above, kindly send in your ancestry to Dr. Howe who will publish the tine | with the other genealogical data as the investigation proceeds. The names Edmunds, Ware, . Crowell, . Hand, Hughes, Mecray and many others ap pear among the Mayflower descend ants of Cape May County. Especially corrections in dates are desired and the location of family bibles containing records. Dr. Howe will welcome assistance in this work. And in view of the. national celebration next year of the three bundredth anniversary of the landing of the Pilgrims at Plymouth, the subject should be of great interest to Cape May people, and those who formerly lived here. And be it further ordained and enacted, that if any person or persons shall fire or cause to be fired or exploded any rocket, squib or powder cracker head the limite of said ctiy, under the penalty of the law, every person so offending shall forfeit and pay for each offence the sum of ten dollars. . , Approved June 27, 1877.
