C x 64 © H s C 04 142 0D l EL 1B 5g 55 11:40 WILL BE REBUILT AT AN ESTIMATED COST OF $40,000-WORK TO START THIS } JOE 99 COMMISSIONERS ON THE JOB + Cape May‘s‘street system is to be improved by the reconstruction of our of its principal streets, it was decided at the regular meeting of the rd of Commissioners last Tuesday. The streets to be paved are Ocean, Decatur, Jackson and Perry, nd the estimated cost will be nearly $40,008, Ocean Street will cost 10,026, Decatur $7,637, Jackson $10,055 and Perty $10,772. The specifications call for concrete paving, with three foot gutters. Expansion joints will be constructed every 35 feet. . Considerable expense ould be reduced by eliminating brick gutters, but the city refuses to adopt — measures in this matter, and insists on a thoroughly. good job, with a view of economy in the future, Evers pomsible step is being taken to mesure the rapid completion f this work. . City Solicitor Lewis T. Stevens has already been instructed o prepare the necessary preliminaries, and City Engineer Bell is working spon the specifications in order to advertise immediately for bidders. The ork will be started in the late fall, and wili only form a beginning to an borate street construction program for ‘Cape y, it in said. The streets that nre not to be surfaced at present, will be put in he finest possible condition as dirt roads. — Particular attention will be paid to Beach Avenue and some of the ous streets which run between Washington atreet and the beach. . It is the plan of Commissioner of Streets Wentzell that in the future the city highways are to be assets, rather than the Mabilities which they have been for some time in the past. , . TROLLEYS PRESENT PROBLEM The defunct Ocean street ‘Passenger Railway system presents a problem to the city officials which is difficult to solve. . What is to be done with the tracks on Ocean street? . Of course, if there is any posst bility of the trolleys resuming ‘service, the ‘tracks should be laid in the new street, but if there is no plataible reason fer believing that the trolleys will run next season, the tracks should be tom: out, . Tracks without trolleys are a rather useless unnecessary adornment. It was recently hinted that the Ocemn Street Passenger Railway had offered Cape May the use of their cars, and that the city was going to operate them, but this is not believed to be true. . ‘The city must find out exacily where it stands in the matter, however, before they can take any action on the streets, and to this end, the City Clark, Mr. Porter, has been instructed to arrange a conference with Melson Z. Graves, the President of the Trolley Company, . As fat as the financial condition of the trolley company is concerned, it would be possible tor the trolleys to operate, it is suid.
