D.} Geneological Articles by the Rector of the Church of the Advent The Will of Joseph Whilldin. Joseph Whilldin (Whilden) made his will 16 March, 1748, naming his wife, Abigail--sons, Matthew, Jumes P e ma ef and Loes. Also deceased daughters Mercy‘s children, Ellis and Judith, Grandsons, "Memukin" Hughes, Willfam and Isecar Crafford. _ Joseph Whilldin, son of Joseph Whilldin 1st., died two days after making the will, and the instrument was proved 30) March, 1748, the inventory 26 April. and the accounting 19 May of the

great-grandson of Hannah Gorham, and a Mayflower descendant. In the early history of the County there are three of the name of Memucan Hughes at least six of the name of Humphery Hughes, two Constant Hughes, four Elijuhs, five Jereminhs, five Jucobs, four Davids, five Daniels, six James, three Ellises, three Isracla/four Thomases, eight Josephs--It will be seen that it is not an easy matter to disentangle the different families of the Hughes name. . The abstract of the will of Joseph. Whilldin, given above. opens a wide. field of investigation. and must bring in a large number of members of the Mayflower family adding a new line in some cases, and establishing . the | Pilgrim ancestry David Hughes line before we end our reseaih. The question is, who are the grandchildren of Joseph Whilldin, named in the — will. "My . dece daughter ‘s children, Ellis and Judith"? Did Morey marry children the hc Miaclie who. are ly trmditions of ndson.. "Memuki brother of s and Judith-poss of full age, and so specially mention Loki j Dr. Danicl L Hughes, in his article on the Hughes of Cape May.says that s Hughes Ist. was the brother of Memucan Ist., and that their father was Jobn and their mother Martha ies. — The Colonial Society . of nia . gives . the follows, . (as shown | last Ellis Hughes married Hannah Whilldin — and | had Memucan, who married Martha Hughes, The line is badly mixed somewhere and it will require careful investigation to strighten it out. There are several points to be observed. (1) Joseph Whilldin‘s will makes no mention of a daughter by the name of Martha, | but does mention his daughter, Merey, and her children, Ellis and Judith, ing they were brothers, the sons of John and Marths Hughes. If they were brothers, they were the children of Mercy, but the will does not so mention them, the conclusion of the writer is that Hannah married Ellis Hughes and had a son Memucen, the "Memukin" of the will, and that whose coffin Isaac Smith, Esq., the undertaker, or "coffin maker," as he was called, charged to his father, 18 March, 1811.

Israel Hughes, son of Memucan, ied Mary Eldredge, daughter of William Eldrege and had ten child The following ancient wills are of eat interest to the old stock of the ounty. Constantine (Constant) | Hughes his will 4 Septemer, 1747. Extors and sole legates, "My brohers Jacob and Ellis Hughes." Acording to the record of the Colonial Society of Pennsylvania, Constant had son Ellis as well as a brother of Ellis was the son of John and brother of Memucan. . It is difficult to make Dr. Eiuiches‘ record agree with the relationships established by. the wills mentioned. A valued communication hus been received from Mr. Charles Tomlin of Cape May Court House, giving information relating to the CrowellWhilldin family, | The writer is able to clear up geneoalogical problems of one, two or three hundred years ago; the record of the living families must be made by interested members.
