ANOTHER REASON FOR THE | Mek Pa One reason for the high cost of liv« ing and an inkling as to what becomes of the money raieed by bond issues is furnished in the salary list of the administrative force for the government hotel erected to accomodate the hordes of war workers in Washington. The hotel is a group of dormitories in the vicinity of the Capitol. A Miss James, the uperintendant, gets in salary and maintainance $6,404.. Compare that figure with $5,000, the compensation received by most of the principal bureau chiefs in the exccutive departments, ‘The Commissioners of the Indinn Bureau, and the Land Office, the Chief of the Weather Bu reau, and the assistant secretarioe of the Treasury eath get $5,000, | Miss Davis, the assistant manager, recives $5,004; the private seerctary to the superintendunt gotz $2,464; the regtinter, — $2,184; . the head | bookkeeper, $4,000; | four assistant | bookkeepers, $2,904 each; the head of the office force $2,100; und so on. Needless to say the hotels are not solf-support ing. wk FNOW THE Answikn Nearly $182,000,000 worth of goods were imported from Janan during the first seven months of the current year, or almost four times the pre-war protective . average. . And the | highest wage paid in Japan today is under one dollar a day. How do our workmen like the idea of competition with the attains ahve
