THE LAST WORD INCAKE WALKS < On Tuesday evening of this week, 1 the waiters of the Columbia Hotel i gave a cake walk in the dining room 1 • of the Hotel. - The chief participants of the affair i i included members of the orchestra, 1 the cake walkers and judges. Lawrence Cooper, Wm. Jolly, Harvey Wil- < son and Richard Nash', composed the able orchestra. < A= vaudeville concert preceded the ' cake walk, giving the audience a few 1 thrills in the way of zazzy and 1 shimmy performances. Then came the walk for the luscious 1 ly decorated cake, Joe Jackson was 1 1 the director and the contestants ocm- < posed of two couples designated as Georgia and Alabama. . j1 So fairly were the .couples matched in their art that the worthy jud-_ ges. Joseph Thrickle, -of Pittsburg, was instantly killed when struck by light- • ning it six o'clock on Sunday night, • while walking the ties of the Reading railroad bridge at Strathmere. Thrickle had been fishing off the bridge and when it commenced to rain t started back ,but was struck before he had reached the center of the bridge. The force of the bolt split the railroad ties under bis feet, and almost burned the clothes off his body ' Coroner's physician Douglass was sent for and he pronounced death instantaneous from shock. The body ' was removed to the establishment of Coroner Cadman at Ocean City, and V was taken to Pittsburg for interment. Mr. Thrickle was keeper of the Ben Han bridge at Strathmere for a per- . iod of several years, leaving about ' five years ago for Pittsburg where he I has since made his home. He cam^ , to Strathmere on Thursday for a few f day's fishing, and had intended td leave on Monday to visit his mother j at Richland, N. J., and spend toe - balance of his vacation with her.
