AN' INCORRECT BELIEF EXPLAINED Cruelty to animals is not always caused by indifference to their sufferings. A case in point is the slaughter of migratory birds around lighthouses which was long believed to re- ; suit from the irirds being dazzled by , the great light and consequently flying round and round until they dashed themselves against the glass or fell I exhausted into the sea. But a Dutch , naturalist refused to credit this explanation. He believed that the birds remained within the glaring because they could not see beyond it; in the moming, if they could keep themselves on the wing so long, they could continue their journey. Experiment seeming to confirm his theory, the British Royal Society for the Protection of Birds tested it on a T scale by having resting places I for birds attached to certain light- « £ The result has been most gratifying.
