CATTLE WHILE « THEY ARE YOUNG Dehorning calves by the use of caus-t j tic potash is a simple process, strong- j recommended by the Dairy Depart- ( ment of the New Jersey, State Agri- , cultural College. I . At birth the calves have no horns. | ; before long, button-like structures develop on the skin loose from the skull, and later become attached to the skull proper. These are the beginnings of horns and while in this early stage should be killed with caus- ; potash. First clip the hair away carefully around the spot to be treated, then with a stick of caustic potash moistened in water, rub the skit over the small horn until the skin is broken. Sticks of this Jcind can be procured at any drug store. Care should be taken not to use to% much water as it mgy run down the side of the face and cause sores. Dehorning with caustic should take piace when the calf is from 3 to 10 days old.
