A WONDERFUL RECORD From South. Bend, Indiana, A. R. Erskine, president of the Stndebaker Corporation issued on May Slat the following . interesting statement on automobile industry: Our AprH Sales were 6,589 cars against 2,602 last year, and May 7,400 against 4,084 last year- We have unfilled orders on hand for about 7,qars. ( • ' Our May collations exceed twelve million dollars, and we are today enjoying the biggest business in our history with all indications pointing its continuance. In the first quarter we did thirteen per cent of the total business qf the country, and this quarter are doing fifteen per cent 'of the total business, excluding Ford. . Our profits for this quarter will probably exceed five million dollars before taxes, and 'we fully expect to maintain our present position of leadership in- the industry. We are today making price adjustments based on lower costs, in.additiobvto redaction made eight years ago, and anticipate no difficulty in continuing record earnings throughout the year. The reductions in the prices of motor care which are now occurring are a good thing for the industry, because they will assist in the restoration of confidence and stability. Prices cannot return to pre war levels, because quality standards .are and wages will not return .,to levels. Manufa&urers of popular, well established, standardized cars, made complete in their own will be able to make satisprofits at new price . levels, and the automobile industry will flourish and prosper "if" as when any. industry in the United States is able to do so. Our automobile industry is a stalwart giant and not a weakling tottering to its grave as. some people seem to think at the present time. In our present general depression, this industry has stood up as well, and operated at as high a percentage any industry. The United States in the world's market for motor cars, and our industry will continue to lead all others .in the value of exports of manufactured goods. Persons engaged in the automobile ahd the owners of its securities are, in a fortunate position today as compared with most industries, and I congratulate them. 5 n
