WHO LIFE SUFFERS FROM DROUGHT - NOT ONLY ARE CROPS SUFFERING THRUOUT . SOUTHERN JERSEY FROM. THE LACK OF RAINFALL BUT WILD LIFE IS FEELING IT KBENLY AS WELL C b Ponds that ordinarily arc filled \ with water are either totally dry or rapidly reaching that state and many small "Bent Tortoises" or- _ Land Tuitles" which are to bd seen in the loads everywhere and particularly on concrete roads. What has happened is the known water pools and streams have failed and the little reptiles are seeking water. In venturing into the highways these harmless tortoises fall victims to vehicles and more erisilytheir natural enemies. Nor is that worse phase of the situation. It remarkable how many motor car drivers take a delight in crushing the life from the helpless Creatures just . for the spoil of hearing their hard ; shells, . proof against most natural ! enemies, crush beneath the. weight of , the cars. ' . ' , . ■ Probably few of these drivers would agree that they are cruel w»oi- | out reason but certainly they must agree if they stop to think about it at all that such a practidfc is not becoming a real grown up human being j' who should protect rather than dej stroy a Helpless creature when that ; creature is a friend of man — hitting i even a human being when down is considered unsportsmanlike. The birds, while perhaps the least affected by the dry- spell are neverI theless driven to wandering far from their usual haunt* to. seek water and congregate in large numbers at the ! unfailing streams and pools. Crops Fairly Good What is of more interest, perhaps. I to the resorts is the fact that certain j early crops are dwindling in auantifv i and soaring in price. The pea crop j is hard hit and fields intended for I canning purposes are yielding only a third or half of- what they should ! under favorable conditions. I- Other .crops are requiring replant- ! ing and show signs of being little | better than the pea yield,. Fruit is Fairly Good The fruit crop for this season seems j to be in better prospect than was | considered possible after the very 'late frosts of this spring and many | orchards seem to promise as good a ,fcvield as in former years.
