TRENTON'S ■ OPINION ON GOVERNOR FIGHT * . CORRESPONDENT BELIEVES RUNYON IS STRONGEST REPUBLICAN CANDIDATE YET IN FIELD. DIRECT PRIMARY i DISCUSSED. Although candidates for the next goveAor of" New Jersey will not be nominated until the fall of next year battle lines are now being drawn within the Republican party, where jl there is a- great division of sentiment over the question who shojild be the party nominee. At this time there is one out-and- & oat avowed candidate for the Republican nomination, Senator William B. Mackay, of Bergen county. He represents the organization type Of politician- There is a strong prospective candidate in the field , in the peripn of Senator William N. Runyon, | who, while he an organization man, looks far beyond mere party lines in , governmental matters. Mtmy machine Republicans are in p^rt for Mackay. There would be K" . more for him if they thouglit he could ' get the nomination with Runyon as his opponent- But they do not think he eah, thus the partial support for Mackay and the entire absence of spontaneous enthusiasm. i Many organization men believe j , Runyon is entitled to the nomination ) and they are for him, and lined up with the sentiment is the independent voter in the Republican ranks, which now embraces a very large portion of the women votersN Mackay 's Weakness Mackay's weakness as a prospective gubernatorial candidate is freely admitted in- Republican circles, and at the same time the great strength of Runyon is freely admitted. There are vast differences be- . tween the two men personally. Runyon is probably the nrtittv. popular man of New Jersey politics iq a generation, and he is very widely known. Mackay's following is confined almost exclusively to Bergen county and nearby' sections of north Jersey. To head off the possible nomination of a man who has not the full sympathy of the Republican organization, there is talk among some of ,^__tl^Republioans at this time of attempting to repeal in the incoming legislation that section of the direct primary act which relates to the nam- ► ination of candidates for^ governor, pt, This .movement has progressed so far that Assemblyman -William Moore, of Trenton, is slated to be the introducer of the repealer. Repeal of any part' of the direct primary feature of New Jersey's . 'election law would, of course, place | the selection of candidates for pubt. lie office back into the hands of politi- | cal conventions, which are always controlled by political bosses. Some of the machine Republicans feel that the ohly way to head off the nomination of Runyon for governor in 1922 is abolition of at least the direct primary selection of gubernatorial cani ' liidatcs- In this feeling they are unquestionably right, for Runyon yould have little or ■ no chance of success of nomination it, a convention controlled by Republican bbsses. -Mackay wouldn't have much of an art- , vantage either, for that matter, although he is an organization man. , Th€ objection' to him is that he is ( not strong politically. ; Primary Law Talk i There is a plan on foot in connec- i Cion with attenipted. repeal of the J primary law "with relation to candi- ( dates for governor to have a rtew act , so drafted, that the delegates to the < **• -conventions' to choose the candidate? ' for governor would be elected direct- J ly by the people, and with this feature of a new act in mind the antiprimary faction holds that selection of the candidates would still remam 1 with the peopler consequently, the candidates themselves would be popu- 1 lar rather than boss, choices. _ That line of argument is political subterfuge, for with delegates to the gubernatorial -conventions chosen by voters the bosses would undoubtedly , be able to control enough districts to 1 get a boss-owned convention through ( the devious ways of political manipu- 1 lation " I There will , be strong opposition in c the legislature to any attempt to t meddle witlf the primary law. Gov~ e ernor Edwards has declared against o any change at -this time. Just how d far a bill to repeal the direct pn- d mary act or, any .part of it would get t is a' matter of doubt, but there is o reason to believe that strength a enough to pass such legilation could ' hot be mustered. A flat pocketbook and a flat tire j are about the worst combination. r-
