DAILY SAYINGS r Once "upon a time there was a widow named Judith who cut off the head of Holofernes This widow was remarkable in two ways. In the first place, though it had been previously . t stated that she was beautiful, her | biographer in the Apotrypha adds quaintly that "no one threw an evil t- word at her." In the second place this widow exerted her charms only to aave her country. . Since Judith there have been many wiodvi Some of them have been beautiful. Many of them have been merry. All, of them have been ta'ked about. Over in India they have .. a custom of sacrificing a wonmah on ^ her husband's funeral pyre- The dif1< ference between our custom and that ' of India's is that here we only sacrifice the woman's character. Perhaps the reason why widows have acquired such a queer ■ repuia* a tion is that they are so universally charming- Other women nave in fact never been able to find hnythfng : rso unbecoming as to mike a widow totally unattractive, and even when custom demanded that a man's relict ' put on a white sweeping cap, theiltet 1 of triumphs still read like the Gear's , titles. The fact, is that in air ages ' widows have married whom they k • pleased,- md George Washington, Ady dison. Ricnurd Steele and John Wes-ley-are just a few. of those who may ; be included in the illustrious number c of great men who have married wid- t ows. % k < In spite of this, however, the lot - of the widow is a hard one. For the moment she puts oniweeds she is sup- • ' pbsed to weed out any inclination to merriment. The smiles are supposed v to be put away xn camphor; he* ' ' 'bright eyes in a safe of which no one is given the combination and her in- /' terest in life is expected to be ab- r sorbed by the. making of warm, red J underwear for the Tdfeign missionaries. As soon as her late husband 1 is buried her neighbors commence to a keep tabs .on the number of times s she visits the cemetery-mid to speculate as to whether ihe "really cared " anything about Ilenry or not." 1 If she doesn't weep at the mention of his name those same neighbors „ and friends are confirmed in the be- „ lief that she did not; if, on the, other f .hand, she splashes large round tears on the rug before her, they snort ^ contemptuously. "Humph! She'll he ^ jnhn-ied in six months" The real g ' — truth is that the program for the c widgw's friends have arranged for ^ her is that she sit all day in o, dark n room with a life-sized crayon of her late Jiusband in front of her eyes and that she devote herself to. forming a little private salt lake cf her tears. ~ But things float in salt lakes and so it would not be strange if evil reports should be afloat even then. 4 But the real work of the widow's b friends commence when she is first C seen conversing with a man. It may 1 be only the grocer's boy whom^she 5 has been talking to- No matter. The tl interest of . the conversation is not tj iirfputed to the subject of turnips u and butter. It may be that the maii tl whom she talks to is an old friendAn evil coincidence, of course- Then: "She has only teen waiting for Hen ry to die. She always wanteyl Smith, tried to get him when she was single, 1! ^ etc ". » - Indeed, let any widow beware Of C the length* and fiumter of times she visits the doctor, lawyer, baken or candlestick-maker, for, is everyone - of them wflT be seen some sinister I: purpose- \ 1 11 - Is it any wonder that .so nanfJ n , widows marjy again?" Is' it any j w' wonder that they' willingly exchnge i " the secure -income from a deposit in ^ bank for the insecure one of a deposit ih_ their husband's trousers *• pocket? Or that they forsake- the •«' throng of suitors popularly imputed ,w to them in order to- suit the public? c< Verily, the lot of the widow is a hard I! one. 01 v v . H. 0. E. The jifimes of Edmunds, Eldredge, Foster, Hand, Hughes, Learning, Reeves and Smith are but a few of those of whom manyare named as in the Pilgrim line- The first 03 pages sire historical; then follow genalogical records of the Pilgrim ancestors of Cape May persons. There, are nine illustrations. Evidently the volume1 is-the work of "three! years," as Stated . in the "foreword," but most authors would require twice that period to accomplish What has been performed^ The ; author is engaged now on another . ■ work on the general subject, to be ' entitled "The Religious and Legal ; of the Pilgrim State," ; and he is. clearly well-equipped to : make it an authoritative volume. ; —Proceedings New Jersey Historical ; Society. j ( — ( PUBLIC NOTICE ■ Sealed proposals will® bo received ; the Commissioners' of the City of ] May in regular meeting, on ; Tuesday, December 20, 1921, at 10 A. i for the removal of garbage from ■ City, from January 1, 1922, for j of three years and (five years, •< specifications to be supplied by : City Engineer.
