REAL WASHINGTON INTENSELY HURAN ,! BY NO MEANS THE DEMIGOD HE HA8 BEEN DEPICTED. i Admittedly of Violent Temper, but With Strong Powers of 8elf-Con-trol — Naturally Melancholy. The Father of His Country would " hardly have fancied himself In the role of a demigod — as folks nowadays are disposed to regard him. He was very | J human. i When a young man, his hair was de- ! cldedly red. At the age of fifty he 'was quite gray, and on" occasions of I ceremony his locks (done up In a j queue) were freely powdered, as was ' the custom of the day. His teeth from early manhood gave ' him a great deal of trouble. They were. I In fact, badly decayed— dentistry ai 1 that period being nn undeveloped nrt ; — and this circumstance rather marred his good looks when he smiled or « | laughed. j j He was also considerably npekJ ! marked, having suffered afTwrtack of I smallpox at nineteen years of age. I I while In Barbados with his Invalid 5 j brother. Those were days when most j people had smallpox sootier or later. ■ vaccination being as yet uuthnught of. j 1 1 At fifty-seven (when Inaugurated as I ill President In New York), lie had lost I j nearly all of his teeth. He then wore j it false set of hippopotamus ivory. | 5 ] u^lch made him very uncomfortable. 5 i In sitting for his most famous por- [ 8 i trait, painted by Gilbert Stuart, his j 1 I lips were padded out with a wad of 1 ? cotton. I ' He seems to have had little seqsa. . of humor, and unquestionably was of i a most melancholy temperament. The 1 dinners he gave In New Tork were j described by his guests as dull affairs: j ' As a rule, he sat silent, rather sad of j .isage, and taking little part In the on versa t Ion, • While others talked, he i . ould keep tap-tapping on the lablei I dge with fork or spoon — a curious I ablt he had. 1 He had a pronounced weakness for i .-ambling — though always held In I <-heck by a reluctance to commit him- • self imprudently; A born speculator, he was constantly engaged In land deals. He subscribed to every lottery and raffle that came along, and would spend many hours at a stretch with a pack of cards, though usually a loser. To attend and bet on a horse race, he often wen! to Annapolis, or even as far as Philadelphia. Spelling was by no means his forte. To the end of his life he wrote "winder" for window, "latten" for Latin, etc. Nor Is this surprising, Inasmuch i as his education was finished In a vilI lage school. The style of his pentnan- ; ship, so neat and clear, followed the

stereotyped copies of the "Young Man's Companion," which was the guide of his boyhood. At Mount Vernon he had a very de cent collection of books, but his reading seems to have been restricted mainly to works on farming and military science. How he managed to evolve the classic literary style that marks bis public and private writings Is a puxrle not easy to solve. The discussion here attempted; however, Is net of Washington's many perfections, hut of his human weaknesses —to show that, like the rest of us. he was far from godlike. This mosi admirable of men had certainly a terrific temper. He could swear on occasions with alarming emphasis, A story, well authenticated. Is that he pitilessly beat an Alexandria butcher with a horsewhip because the meatmercbnnt had exposed for sale a deer that was recognized by the master of Mount Vernon as killed on his own plantation.. w In 1759. a few months after .its mar rlage, he wrote: "I am now, X believe, fixed at this seat, with an agreeuble partner for life; and I hope to fibd more happiness In retirement than 1 have ever experienced amidst the wide ' and bustling world." Note, If you please, that Washington was then only twenty-seven years old. Yet bis attitude of mind was elderly, ! with a touch of 6adness. I On his return to Monnt Vernon, j afier the war, be wrote to Lafayette: I "T culled to mind that I was now de- | si-ending the hlU I had been fifty-two years in climbing, and that, though blessed with a good constitution, I i was of a short-lived family, and might soon expect to be entombed In the mansion of my fathers. But I wilt not repine. I have had my day." Think of writing In such terms at fifty -two years -of age ! — a time of life at which men nowndays consider that they have barely reached their heyj day. Washington, as a matter of fact, , had still fifteen yours to live, eight of which were to bo spent In administering the affairs of the nation as Its President. But he was always a melanchly man. For many years before his des.th the prospect of his departure from this world seems to have been constantly In his mind. Whence, presumably, the great Interest he took In the removal of the old family burial vault at Mount Vernon, which was being undermined by an underground stream. « America's Predominant Figure. One hundred and ninety years have elapsed since George Washington was born. One hundred and twenty-three years have elapsed since he died. He never saw a railway locomotive, a steamboat or an electric HgbL But he still lives as the predominant figure of American history and the annals of American statesmanship record no state paper that even" approximately compares with his farewell address.
