NEWS NOTES OF FMtUf? Watch the dickens Closely . The chicken business is one where great detailed work is involved and the poultrymen who watches his. chicks closely is usually the or.e who [ has the greatest number of pullets to put in the laying house next September. Poultry specialist Allen, who has won the hearts of every poultryman in the county poultry association, has sent to the Cape May County Record Club members summaries of the various record clubs throughout the State. It will be interesting to othef poultrymen to se some of the figures and comments for February. These comments have been taken from records » on more than 42,000 birds. The average feed oo<rt per 100 pounds was $2.13. Cape May county's cost was $2Ji6. Average price per dozen, 50 cents- Cape May county's price, 43 cents. Average return per bird over feed cost, 28 cents. Cape May county's return was 16 cents- Average : production per bird was 10 eggs. : Cape May county's production per : bird was 10 eggs. The supposition would be that the farmers know fair- ] » ly well how to manage their hens, but , they do not gnow yet how to manage 1 the feed_man, nor the consumer. j Some hints to poultrymen are: 1(1) Plenty of water and oyster ( shell are needed in the spring months- i (2) Lights should be turned off ] gradually and not used after April 1. j (3) Do not cut down in grain too ( "°°°' i (4) Figure on more pullets and less <• bens next fall. — - ffil Check up on ventilation in the |< incubator. Eggs should weigh 5% j« less on the 7th day and 10% less on if the 14th day than they did when put ] c into the incubator. (3) Don't ever put over 350 chicks s to a hover and feed sparingly and 8 often. A hungry chick is a lively * chick. t
(7) Keep plenty of heat under the hover and feed plenty of milk in earthenware dishes. (8) Gert the chicks outside in ten days(9) Don't forget the jnonthry poultry meeting at the Court House on Thursday evening, April 6. Error in Cabbage Maggot Control last week wrong information was given to the newspapers in regard to the treatment for cabbage maggots. "Hie correct amount of corrosive sublimate crystals Is 1 oz. to 10 gallons of water instead, of % oz. as was printed. Water the cabbage plants with hi cup of this solution 3 or 4 days after « setting and then again 8 days after setting. If your cabbage plants were badly _infested last year, would you plant cabbage again this year and not take any precaution to check the maggot ? If so, you are a bigger gambler than most of the Cape May county cabbage growers. Llewellyn Hildreth, of Rio Grande, ■ and Harry Mackey, of Eldora, will ! carry on demonstration plots this 1 . year to 6how that cabbage maggof j can be controlled. Fruit Committee of County Board of Agriculture W. H .'Powell, Swainton (Cape May I Court House. R. F. D); Dr. Julius1 Way, Cape May Court House; Nor- ! map- S- Taylor, Cape May, R. F. D-, "and Milton Godfrey, Tuckahoe. I The orchards chosen by this committee for demonstration orchards for : .1922 are those of A C. HildretH? ap- % P'e, Rio- Grande; W. H. Powell,' peach, Swainton; W. L- Yeskes, apple, T uckahoe. and Daniel Bishop, ap- I pie. Eldora. It is planned that the general management of these orchards will make them model orchards. The delayed dormant spray js nearly ready to be applied. Aphis are hatching and the apple buds will soon j be silvery, the spray should be com- ■ pleted before the little leaves are as ; large as squirrel ears. Alfalfa Spring Seeding Several samples of soil have been '■ tested this year for acidity prior to alfalfa seeding. The general recom- j mendation for lime is about one ton i of hyd rated lime per acre. After the ( Hme has been harrowed into the soil 1 a bushel and a half of seed oats and ] 20 pounds of inoculated alfalfa seed per acre can be used as a very early J seeding. t The oats are usually cut in the milk stage for hay and if conditions J are favorable a. good fall cutting of alfalfa can be expected. A top dressing of 400 or 500 pounds of a 2-10-0 , fertilizer would be a help to the alfalfa. J. A. STACKHOUSE, Co. Agr. Agent. 1
