FIGHT JERSEY FOREST FIRES DEPARTMENT OF CONSEBVA-| TION AND DEVELOPMENT OF; STATE ESTABLISHING LOOK-! OUT STATIONS TO PROTECT FORESTS The Department of Conservation and Development State of New Jersey, has taken steps to not only protect the pine forests of New Jersey, lumber in the making is the of a campaign inaugurated by department. The Department wishes first to leesen the huge losses by forest fires of the trees and to that end has already erected ten lookout stations and plan many more. Work will begin this week on a steel tower at Mount Pleasant and this tower will be connected by telephones with those at Risley and Belleplain. The tower at Belleplain is the nearest to Wildwood and it will be one of the ohpective points of tourists in this section once it becomes known what a wonderful view is afforded from its top. - The Belleplain tower is sixty feet , high and was erected last year. It 5 is located one mile north of the Belle- I £ plain railroad station on the road to j } Tuckahoe- It overlooks an exception- I } ally wide and beautiful view which | a embraces the Maurice river, Tuckahoe S and lower Great Egg Harbor river % sheds, Delaware Bay, the coast and- c Cape May county. J The towers are open to the public 3 day except when the woods are } too wet to burn and during the closed j months of winter. The locations are 1 not difficult of access and each tower * is easily climbed by a stairway. £ Camp sites with fireplaces where an 3 out-door lundh may be cooked are J provided nearby. 1 From the lookout station the j watcher detects forest fires while t I they are still small and reports them ) immediately to the proper warden. He is equipped with a detailed map - of the region, a pair of good binocui lars, a telephone and knows the disI I tric-t thoroughly. [ The efficiency of a tower is measured less by the number of fires reported than by the proportion of fires extinguished before they gain headExperience has proven that in this respect the lookout tower meets a most important need which cannot be satisfied by any other means. These present towers are the beginning of a system designed to cover the forested parts of the StateFully effective fire control will not be had until this beginning is expanded so that a fire anywhere will be sure to receive prompt attention. In harmony with the idea of protection -ymbolifced by the lookout tower every individual is urged by the department to be constantly alert and interested to see that even the smallest fire does not go unattended. Stations are now established at ten points- These are Bearfort, Culvers, Windbeam, Kinnelson and Edison in ■ the northern part of the State, and south of a line drawn from Camden | to Barnegat are the ones at Penn. Batson, Blue Anchor, McKeetown and : I Belleplain. ^ ! NOBODY IS INDEPENDENT— WE Ij NEED THE OTHER FELLOW ) I A time of business depression has I one beneficial effect of great value J ; and that is to knock out of folks' I I I heads the idea that they can be in- l dependent and need pay no attention | to the other fellow. t j People who thought they were "in- J dependent! y wealthy" have found | 'that when general business depres- V sion comes, dividends stop, interest isn't paid, values drop and after all, their "fortunes" which were to make - them "independent" don't succeed in pulling them away from contact with the rest of the world- They find that the good fortune or the ill fortune of the rest* of folks has a direct effect on them. This is particularly true in a community; like ours- There can be no real prosperity that doesn't -r help everybody — and no ill fortune fails to touch all classesPay Up Week is a community effort to stert better times by the help g of everybody. If you don't help, _ you'll lose- If you do help, you'll ~ gain. Plan not only on your, own in- , dividual action in this campaign but your efforts to get everybody else into line- If we can start cash rolling, we'll start better times, better jobs, more prosperity for everybody.. SECRET BTUTT IJ Toupg Man (to Muriels young = brother): "I say. Jackie, do you know that clock Is an hour fast?" Jackie: "Yes: but^lon't tell sis. She put It ahead, and she thinks you don't j know it."
