I COUNTRY AMERICA SHOULD « ORGANIZE EFFORTS j 1 | (iBy John H. Perry, president Ameri- < can Press Association) ' When will Country America get its j fair share of the wealth it produces? There are more than sixty million J people in the country, as against <ess 1 than fifty million in the cities and « towns of more than ten thousand pop- s ulation. < All wealth is produced from the i earth. Country America does the i producing. Yet, it onlv gets a very i small part of what it produces. i As an example, the R- J- Reynolds \ Tobacco Company last year made a ! net profit of sixteen million dollars l ($16,000,000). They paid Country |c ■ America a few cents a pound to oro- I duce the tohacco, added a few cents j« ■per pound for labor, and sold back 1 4 . the product for several dollars a p pound and reaped a harvest of sixteen i million dollars net profitHow many tobacco growers would ! 1 you have to stand shoulder to _shouU_ 1

der whose combined net profits would [< equal sixteen million dollars? All .» the tobacco growers in America last |* year didn't make a profit of one-half ij! of what the R. J- Reynolds Tobacco jjCompanv madeOr, t°Vl> the American Teleohone ' and Telegraph Company. They took t fifty-four million dollars ($54,000,000) net profit from the American 1 public. How many billions of Wealth <j would Country America have to pro- ' dace to make fifty-four million dol- a lars net profit. ... 5 The same unfair and dispropor- f tionate distribution of profits is true <• as to the live stock growers .when " compared to the profits of the Packer F Trust. The wool growers get $1.96 ( a oat of the wool that goes to make the ,« $40 suit. The same system of un- 1 equal profits is true as to the cotton - s growers of the South, the grain A growers of the East and West — the u producers of Country America every- j ^ The United States has a total » wealth of two hundred and fifty bil- h lions. Country Ameri'- gets lessV than 25 per cent, when it should get 1 more than 50 per cent of the wealth u created annually. , e A hullabaloo was made about plac- F ing ONE "dirt farmer" in the President's cabinet Some big city paper.- a raved at the idea of putting ONE farmer on the Federal Reserve Board. Country America Should have not only one member in the Cabinet, but not less than one- half of all the Cab r inet members- The country has six , votes to the city's five. Yet, the country's voice has hardly been heard in Washington. It has never been 1 heeded to any considerable extent. t The Farm Bloc in Congress, with on- t ly a score of members, has been able to make both political parties sit up ' and take heed chiefly because of the 1 SLEEPING POWER of Country ] America. • ) If Count rv America will awaken and demand her rights, irrespective j of parties, it will obtain what justly < •belongs to it politically, industrially, c ; economically, socially and commer ( : dally- ' , j If the country publishers of Ameri- - ca will unify into a Newspaper Bloc ' i and demand what belongs to Country 1 i America, no power on earth will stop j them from getting it- L | This government, for the first time, has recognized the right of Country : America to combine to dq CO-OP- i ERATTVE MARKETING. This is ! only one step in the right direction. < Country America produces the I wealth of America, yet, when it sells] its product, it has no say about the I price for which its product shall sell | Mr- City Man fixes that price for you, Mr. Country Man! |j When Mr. City Man sells his pro- , duet .to Country America, Country) America has no say as to the price it . shall pay for what it buys. I suan pay lvr u imjo. i

Mr. City Man also obligingly fixes i that price for you. . 1 j Country America, through its pubcan force the rights of the country producer to have something; to say about the orice for whioh he; sells his product and the cost of the product he buys. What's more, the city men COMto fix the buying and selling prices in Country America, and for years have combined to do so, and nothing seriously has ever been done to stop it except some political wind-jamming- For instance, former : Attorney-General Palmer's Broadcast- . ed statements of the guilt of the Packer's Trust, and his Intention to send : the higher-ups to the penitentiarySuch statements, having served their political purposes, the procedure was ; I The same is true with the numer- • | ous indictments by the Federal Trade : I Commission and the United States investigations, which 'find divers and • sundry trusts guilty of conspiracy. What 'happens to these' findings? ever has happened — NOTHING EVER WIIX -HAPPEN UNTIL

Jfrqm IN OFFICE IN WASHINGTON THAT THEY WEUL NO LONGER ACCEPT PROMISES FOR PERFORMANCE. The lar-e city dallies of America last year made an estimated- profit of over one' hundred million dollarsThey did this because City America absorbs euA a large share of wealth produced. Twelve thousand country publishers last year made far less than five million dollars— sot $600 net profit per paper. Their net profits should have been between five and six thousand dollars a year each, or a total of fifty to sixty millions. If Country America gets its fair ! share of the wealth it produces, the •Country would share in a prosperity undreamed of. J We can get this if we will form a ' solid front and intelligently fight for it. It is up to ne in the country publishing field to form a COUNTRY NEWSPAPER BLOC and to use this Bloc to advocate the organization, the unification, industries of Country America, so that the country can fix the price of its own products. The Country Newspaper Bloc could and should lead the fight |
