Ever since Mr. Wilson's breakdown in October, 1919. Mr- Tumulty has asumed to be the former president's mouthpiece, and has studiously let it - be known that no man stood closer to his chief than he himself. The re? . " suit has been that Mr. Tumulty has commanded tremeudous influence among Mr- Wilson's friends, who considered their cause won if they could gain his favor- Tumultv is now seen as a man who has sought to capital-, ize another's fame for his own personal profit. He stated that the tendency j of the times was to cut down the | jj acreage and yet to increase crops by | i improved soil conditions. Many times, , I through his talk, came up the old 1 3 standby, cowpeas planted in May to 1 I be followed by a winter cover crop in I September. Most of our best farf mers recognize the inqjortance of soil improvement, but comparatively ' few will turn over a piece of land to > soil improvement purposes only, and stick to it long enough to get the seed actually in the ground. During the visit of the soil specialist, a trip was made to W. S- Thompson's farm, where Mr. Thompson was consulted as ~ to the advisability of carrying on demonstration work as to the requirements of cowpeas- It is felt in many instances that if certain fertilizers were applied, the resulting growth made would be sufficient to " more than warrant the expenditure for the fertilizer. POTATO VARIETY DEMONSTRATIONS Eight strains of. Cobblers, certified, uncertified, grown at home and at a distance, have been planted on the farms of R. L. Somers, Ocean View, and Norman Taylor, at Cold Spring. These men are interested in carrying on similar demonstration work of last year, when it was found that South Jersey late grown seed yielded better than either Maine or Virginia seed. As the work dhowing these results was of only one year's duration, it was decided to have the work carefully repeated by interested growers before giving much publicity to the feet-
