0C^&ESTf RESORT PUTS THROUGH ORDINANCE TO PREVENT "STREET BATHING." RESTRICTIONS LESS ON BEACH ^ Ocean City has adopted an' ordinance which, if it can be enforced, will prohibit persons from passing thru the streets in "abbreviated" bathing suits unless there is some suitable This ordinance has been backed by the bathing house proprietors- The church people of the resort wanted the reform carried to the wearing of suits on the shelfs of the bathhouse but this would have barred many a few years ago bathing suits could be hired for 25 cents to 50 cents at any of the shore resorts. Closets could be had for $1 a week. When the prices jumped each year cottages began installing facilities on their own premises. Ocean City, which is a cottage community, bathes largely from cottages, especially when these are near the beach as most of them Mayor Chacnnion, who introduced the ordinance, will also have a large J say as to its enforcement- This much j can be said positively, that the ordi- c i nance Will not be enforced by him in a way to oppress persons attired in modest bathing suits. They can pass ; to and from the beach and their cottages without being molested. They need wear no covering over their bathing suits unless the latter are "abbreviated." The ordinance reads as follows: "That it shall be unlawful for any person or persons to travel in or upon any of the streets, alleys, public boardwalk or highways of the city of Ocean City in abbreviated bathing robes, or other costumes of a similar nature unless a suitable robe or covering, from the shoulders to the knees, shall be worn over said abbreviated robe? or suits to properly cover such person from public view. "That any person or persons who shall violate any of the provisions of this ordinance, shall, upon conviction thereof before a proper officer having jurisdiction, be subjected to a fine in any sum not exceeding $100 at the discretion of such officer before whom said person or persons may be tried, and in default of payment of said fine, be imprisoned in the city or county jail for a term not exceeding thirty days at the discretion of said officer, and any repitition of any act therein prohibited on any day following such conviction shall be deemed a new offense" Last year Ocean City was more liberal in the character of suits allowed • on the beach than most resorts. This = liberty was abused to such extent as m to cause much complaint- The present ordinance will not correct this. It will prevent, however, persons going to the railroad stations or into the business section in immodest suits, even if it does allow immodest suits on the beach.
