"UNCLE JOE" RETIRED J. A. Connell, 67 years of age, fondly known to the Pennsylvania system as "Uncle Joe," the conductOctober, 1869, he started on the "rattlers" as a newsboy and in De;i. after fiftv years of service. .In or, went on the retirement list May i-ember, 1871, worked as a laborer on ihe Camden and Amboy R- R. In 1872 he entered the service as brakeman but left in 1874 going "down East," where he accepted serv.ce with the Old Colony Boston and Maine R R- as brakeman. He regained there until 1884 when he returned to New Jersey and became a brakeman on the West Jersey and Seashore R R-, on March 1st, 1884. ami in eight months was promoted to conductor, serving in the latter caparity for 38 years during which time he had the honor and pleasure of being transferred five times to the p. B. and W. R. R. on account of inaugurations and G. A. R- encampOn one occasion Mr- Connell had I the distinction of running the late President McKinlejrs train on his last I inaugural trip from Baltimore to 'Wa-hington- On another, Conductor 'fonne" took President Harrison's 1 train from Camden to Cane May.
