E Because it manufacturers more of » its car than does anv other maker in America, the Nash Motors Company is in a position to absolutely govern the quality; with an immense foundry, forge shop, heat-treatin- department it is dependent upon no outside facilities for the quality of metafs used in the important parts of the car. While, for instance, it is the practice of some motor manufacturers to use grey iron in' cylinder blocks, Nash Motors employs an iron that contains chrome and nickel. The grain structure is this Nash iron is very close and much less porous than in ordinarv grey iron. Porous iron lends itself readily to dis- * tortion, whereas this is eliminated in • Nash cylinder irons- In the manufacture of this iron, control of a great number of conditions is exercised to brin** about perfect castings. At the verv nu' set precautionary measures are taken with the raw -materials at taken witn tne materials _ — _ t
the plantBefore any of this iron is passed on to the foundry, tests are made of samples in the Nash laboratories- It is made certain that the chemical comnonents of the iron are correct. , material is then sent to the founwhere the metal is melted in the cupola and in hot liquid form poured moulds. j At this point test pieces are also poured and sent back to the labora- . for chemical and physical examination- In the laboratory ear' 1 mixture of metal is given what is as a Brinell test and it must measure up to the high standard of that test before it receives the endorsement of the company's metallurgies This is a check on quality that a- exact as science can make it, and it means to the subsequent car owner assurance of quality and duraibility. By the Brinell test is deter1 mined the degree of hardness attained : 'he mixture. The metal under !--rut:oy is placed in a Brinell ma-i-h' ir where a perfectly uniform ball' ;<>f exceptional hardness is forced into the metal by a pressing process. The depth and diameter of the Impression ( . registered, thus making it possible to determine the exact hardness of the material turned out in any mixin many plants a test is made at infrequent intervals, but -with Nash Motors it is made every da'-, and regulates the work in the foundry for the following da'-. And to make sure 1 that nothing can possibly go amiss in .-0 important matter the testing in- * j struments themselves are checked . rigidly and frequently. The degree of hardness in metal regulates the wear on cylinder ft locks A favorable relationship in the relative hardness of the cylinder block, piston, niston rings, and cylinders is 1 brought about through the skillful r ixture of metals and positive testsThis means longer life to the motor. Laboratory tests also determine the stre. ztn f enst iron and determine Nash Motors, because of its facilities for manufacture, is makinv cyliron considerably higher Brinell than can be secured in an ordinary grey iron castingAll of which is an answer in part at least, to the question of the car owner: Why do some makes of car's longer life than others? The Difference — Between the Coct of Good and Cheep Printing fa to sEght that he who goes Chopping from printer to printer to secure hfa printing at a few cents less than what it is really worth hardly ever makes day laborer wages at this unpleasant '"l If you want good work at prices that are right gef your .
