AT IT AGAIN || It was with a sense of fulfilled ex- 1 § pectancy that we read the annual Ledger slam at Cape May, appearing j in their issue of July 5th. Our feel- 1 ings, however, were slightly mixed | with disappointment, for of all the j ] series of Cape May slams appearing 1 in the Ledger, the last was by far the j i junkiest jumble of journalism- I If the Ledger is to continue its : periodic slams at Cape May, we think ; we are at least entitled to the courtesy of having an . experienced writer | handle the story, rather than a cub;, who will pen any sort of a mess to ; get the price of a cheap excursion , and meal over the Fourth. In the past stories were written)] with some little egard for at least 1 cheap, hack English- But if the | heading of this . ast article (which j 1 follows), be Eng: sh, then make the j most of it. . "Cape May Nails as Canard Rumor j Parade Lost Itseli " I The story that follows this splendid piece of "headwork" is as far re- ] moved from the Cape May parade as j its author it from the ability which , g he, no doubt, is confident of possess- _ ing. Such a tale would have been disbelieved by the gullible characters ' of Twain's story of King Arthur; ' compared with it, the wild flights of j Poe read with the accuracy of Geo- 5 _ detfc Survey- i Every year Cape May contributes j its share to the advertising and cir- * culation departments of the Ledger. < It is to be hoped that "them days are ; gone forever." Of course such an ac- * tion will not interfere with the com- { fort of the stockholders, but it will ■ serve to express our knowledge that ; the hand that feeds is bitten; it may ( add another garland to the brow of j i that functionary who is paid to sep- , I arate the wheat from the chaff and « (-who let a tremendous crop of chaff in. I. We were tempted to print a coin • of this truly admirable newspaper ar- « tide, but we could discover no palpa- j ble excuse for doing so- The thing 1 is a tissue of lies; and we are loathe < I to expose the struggling young re- < - porter to any further ignominy caused t * by his pitiful attempt to be funny. « Moreover, our space is limited; we 5 have not nearly the room that the , Ledger has for bunk- ] OPEN LETTER TO THE PUBLIC . Editor Star and Wave, Cape May City, N. J. ' My Dear Sir: In reference to the scurrilous ar- < tide that appeared in the night extra < edition of the Evening Public Ledger ( of July 5th in reference to our 4th of ' July parade in this dty, I beg leave to ' say that while I am correspondent of < all the Philadelphia papers, as well , as New York, Boston, Baltimore and Brooklyn papers, the Associated ( Press and Standard News Association, j I have never written an article detri- , mental to Cape May, of which I -am a 1 citizen, and am proud to say that I , claim it as my birthplace. No doubt many unthoughtful folks will lay the 1 article at my door. I would appre- . date it if you would deny me being date it if you would deny my being ' the author of the mess that appeared ; in the "Ledger." - With the kindest of personal re- . 1 gards, I beg to remain, J | Very truly yours, EDGAR P. STITES, JR. ! AROUND TOWN The chairman of the music commit- . i tee of July Fourth hereby extends . thanks to all who so ably assisted in j the chorus work and in the conduct 1 ! of the music program- Without the • , assistance of Arthur G. Reeves.)' Leopard Sandgran and Theodore j ' Reeves, together with Sergeant Albert ] 5 Smith and Sergeant O'Shaughnessy, the various programs in flag presents- ' tion, entertainment and guidance of { the bands and polidng of the Conven- , tion Hall could not have been carried ' out successfully. It should also be < stated that the Cape May band could i not have been in the parade without the valuable aid of Hariy Bellang- J as manager and librarian. The chair- , man also appreciates the good feeli- ' and kind support of the members of ' the Jl'i!diwo<RH»and,"*who made up the ; Cape May band by furnishing four- t teen men <
