A VETERAN'S PLEA FOR A ME- 1 MORIAL MONUMENT , o — — s It may not be generally known to 1 our people that away back in 1880 the F comrades of John Mecray Post No. 40, G. A. R., had thought of erecting J a soldiers and sailors Memorial Monument in Cape May City. But, for | [the lack of funds, the project was I postponed until the times became betIter and money raised for thai pur- J pose- However, it was agreed to : j make a detail to raise funds for a Monument and they have never given ' 1 up the hope of accomplishing their ' purpose- . As the years rolled by Post ' 40 increased their membership one j | hundred and five comrades- One by . one they have gone; passed away to their eternal camping ground and oui * comrades have been added ti that si'- •' ent army of Blue in the great Beyon l 1 And now, this 1922, there are not s~' many left of the gray and venerable \ Post 40, G. A. R., the onlv whit* roost of Civil War veterans of '61 to : '65 in Cape May County, numbers 1G 1 on the Post Roster today. It always | » was their desire and hope to see a ! monument erected before they passed r away, that their children could gath- ? ed around that Memorial of their ^ Sires on the 30th day of Mav and - a" [ homage to the beys who saved our f couhtfy and carry the beautiful flow-" : ers of Spring to decorate that menu- : » ment that their fathers placed there. < f But now. after all these years that . r have gone by and so few are left to » carry out the will of the many that 1 f have gone, it has always seemed a 1 r sacred duty resting upon those who 5 are left to fulfill their promise- - The • E burden has fallen upon the small 1 f band of Old Veterans to carry out the 1 L' wishes of their dead comrades. There 1 1 has never been a sordid thought for [ monetary gain by those men, but a 1 J sincere devotion and love of our great 5 country and American Ideals. I It is idle to disDUte the fact that f Patriotism in t" instinct when div- 1 r erse views are held concerning it, Pa- : \ triotism still remains the Teat fact f with which those responsible for the : L safety of a state have to reckon.
though a man who endeav- 1 ored to discredit Patriotism, may console himself with the belief that he .is I the friend of mankind, he must ex- 1 pect to be regarded as the enemy of his country. Whilst every man has a I right to his views, still he has no right to pcrvftit- the mind against them whom he knows are loyal to his native land. Again going back to the subject of a Memorial Monument, every man has known the feeling that arises witpin him when he has come to a soldiers or sailors shaft or stone which speaks . a silent language within his very soul A feeling arises, an awe, a silent reverence. a thought of his country's defenders. There is nothing under heaven that man can invent in any shape that appeals greater to a tqwn 'man or woman than silent monument ! dedicated to our country's defenders. 1 This is our plea for a memorial monument- I wish we could have one a mile apart in every str.te in the Union to make men remember their duty a? good citizens and more loyal to his : native land. ^ ^ A.
