( BXBX0X7IX BXBXBXBXBX BXBXBXBX BXBXX The Story of Asbestos I • ASBESTOS SHINGLES have proven such an ideal roofing that a few • words regardmg the fireproof mineral, Asbestos itself, might be of interest. Q Within hardly more than one man's life time, Asbestos has been taken trora among those curios that merely astonish or amuse us by their unusual- W ness and, by; reason of its peculiar properties, has been adapted to the service U ot industry in upwards of a thousand different ways. fL r centuries Asbestos was in the freak clasa- It apparently upsets 3r many of the laws of nature. It is a nugget of rock— as heavy and dense as marble, yet upon examination it ia found to be composed of silky fibres which ii can be carded, spun and woven as easily as wool, flax, or silk- To look at a X * handful of Asbestos one would believe that it would blaze up at the touch of H a lighted match yet it resists high temperatures with no apparent change in its structure. So little has Asbestos been affected by the influence of time X that for untold centuries it has remained in exactly the same state as it is found today. In fact, one of the most valuable properties of this mineral is its indestructibility which enables it to resist all the forces of disintegration, A t* heat, cold fire and moisture.— .This is the quality which renders it particularly useful as a roofing material. — Wood burns; other organic materials not ^9 only burn but disintegrate rapidly under action of the elements. Asbestos rust; Asbestos is entirely immune to climatic or atmospheric conditions which will destroy a sheet of iron. Therefore, as a roofing material it is ideal- Johns-Manville Roll Roofings of Asbestos felts are also impervious to rot and decay and of course tremendously reduce the fire hazard. The Asbestos Shingle is probably the Q most permanent roofing material that is known today. Composed as it is of Asbestos fibres and Portland cement, formed under terrific hydraulic pressure, it constitutes a roofing which is practically impervious to all the agents ^ of destruction. Fire has no effect upon it. You can put a Johns-Manville Asbestos Shitngle in a furnace and draw it out unharmed. Rot is powerless against it; you can bury an Asbestos Shingle in the ground and in ten years take it out and it will be tougher than ever. The action of sun. rain, ice, snow or sleet have no effect upon it. The acid fumes belched forth by the >f chimneys of many industrial plants have little effect upon the material of the shingle^ itself. In damp climates, under trees, where most roofings go to pieces in a short time Asbestos Shingles are as enduring as elsewhere. Jf This latest method of applying Johns-Manville Asbestos Shingles over S old wooden shingles makes them in all respects the most economical roofing ^ you can buy. Vr T. S.
